What would zombies REALLY do?

In fiction, zombies are constantly portrayed as flesh/brain-eating monsters who tend to attack in hordes and infect non-consumed victims. I have to wonder, though... why? Why would a reanimated dead person require sustinence? Why feast on humans and not, say, actual food? Why attack people? The list goes on.

Here's my grand query, however: if a zombie actually existed, how do you think it would ACTUALLY behave like?

probably like a caveman, only acting on instinct, relying on the nervous system, stuff like that

Well according to the first return of the living dead they need the brains to stop the pain of being a zombie and as we have to go by movie logic, that's why they'd attack humans.

I'm thinking something like rabies...So let's say this new form of rabies breaks out, and it makes people crazy, and violent.

Basically, A zombie in real life would be this crazy, aggresive person, who was also very ill, meaning they'd perhaps try to attack you, but don't expect it to hunt you down mercilessly.

Purely speculation mind you, as I know rabies doesn't really work like that...

I think it would act on basic instincts like hunger, sex, and shelter. Which could lead to some monster-rape-gore fantasies. Not saying it would, but its possible. I'll wait for someone more articulate to explain why zombies would eat us, if my explanation doesn't work for you.

Well, the reason they bite is to spread the infection, not to eat. and spreading is the instinct of all viruses. So i think they would attack people.

People are afraid of cannibalism. Since it's always been taboo.

wouldn't matter what they acted like. the military would destroy them, especially if they were the 28 kind. even if the plague was airborne. history has shown (especially world war 2) large numbers of people vs small number of guns wielding people. then the guns will win, not to mention modern weapons, like the M16, which can penetrate three people in a row with one shot. even if they're sulenum style zombies that need a head shot to die, the guns will leave their corpses so mangled that they just be a set of snapping teeth.
