I'm playing through Mass Effect 2 now, and I know DA2 is adapting some elements from that series. While in some cases this is a good thing--I think the dialogue wheel with the icon telling you exactly what your tone is is a positive change--ME2 is...lacking in a few areas compared to DA:O. Mostly in terms of the characters.
In DA:O, I spent almost 100 hours with my companions, talking to them in camp, and while walking around they had great banter with each other. Most of them were really useful in combat too. In ME2, most of my squadmates are pretty one-dimensional until I do their loyalty missions, which develops their characters a bit. Then I have one or two meaningful conversations with them afterwards, and they have little else to say for the rest of the game. They don't banter with each other, half the time they barely acknowledge each other's existence, and because I'm an Infiltrator sniper, I don't need their help in combat half the time. I don't need their help outside of combat at all (My warrior couldn't pick locks or disarm traps, but Shepherd can hack anything).
It's still a great game (and in terms of the DLC, ME2 far outstrips DA:O in value and quality), but in DA:O I got the sense of having to unite a group of hostile castoffs, loners and redemption-seekers into a cohesive, functional group capable of defeating the Archdemon. I really hope DA2 doesn't get away from the importance of party members--both storywise and mechanically.
