read this short article, particularly the first paragraph
[link]http://www.ny1.com/content/top_stories/130335/loved-ones-bid-farewell-to-former-nypd-detective-who-worked-at-wtc-site[/link]

now if I may point out the part that confuses and angers me:
"A solemn funeral service, punctuated by humor and laughter, was held earlier today for a retired police detective"

how would the guy's comment about Polish folk dancing make anything funny?
he died because he tried to help as much as he could in 9/11

am I missing something?

Nuclear response or what mate.

The family had context which you didn't. Thats why it was funny to them. I know that when I die, I want people to remember all the funny inside jokes we shared.

When I die I would rather them laughing about the good times rather than sobbing like crazy.

Seriously dude, the word solemn might be a little out of place, but lots of funerals are punctuated by laughing because people remember the good times and the inside jokes as well as the bad.

When I die, hopefully I'll be old enough to hire a stand-up comedian and an open bar for my wake. Then my remains will be launched into space. While on fire.

You see, OP, these people were trying to remember a great guy in a great way-
Sharing fond memories of him.
They laughed because it was funny.

His death= sad.
Good memories= funny.
That's why my dad wants "You shoulda seen the other guy" on his headstone.

It was a joke that was funny to the people there i don't get why your angry about it. Wouldn't you rather people remember the good things about you when you lived rather then how you died?

When I die, I want some kind of pneumatic thing installed in the coffin, so that whilst they give the eulogy BAM!! I fly out across the congregation like Pop-up-Pirate.

I'd sooner have people laughing at my funeral too, I wanna be remembered for my good humour and shit. I want "Fucking campers..." or the likes on my headstone.

Mainly cause its a family and friends thing. Its like how people at funerals you go smile sometimes and talk about the good things. No one always wants to be sad even at funerals. I know at the last five funerals I've been too (two for older family members, three for friends around my age *cough*18*cough* not related to the war) we laughed more then cried. Just relax, its his family and friends, let them do what they want and handle the loss as they want. Unless you personally want to tell them to start being sad because someone they loved is dead. Then in that case, more power to you, I guess.

Also, its a minor thing, but he didnt die saving lives. He died transporting remains to the morgue after developing cancer. Get your facts straight.

I... That... Uhh...

...Wut?

OT, as everyone else has said, the good times are what you want to remember.

Also, laughter and sadness are quite similar as far as brain chemistry is concerned (hence the almost identical sounds of laughing and crying).
