Whatever happened to Mech Warrior?

Hey guys, remember this beauty of a trailer?

<youtube=orhOvbfyyJw>

That was a trailer for a reboot of a beloved PC franchise (though this game in particular is planned for both PC and 360) called Mech Warrior, and if I recall correctly, that trailer was released sometime in the summer of '09. My question?

Where did the game go!?

Now I'm not sure on the specifics, so if you guys know the details, let me know, but from what I heard a short time after that trailer was released, some folks representing the studio holding rights to an anime called Macross claimed that one of the mech designs was the same as one of the mechs from said anime. Then there was some business about a lawsuit, and lo and behold, almost 2 years later and not a peep of information on this game since that trailer.

Has anyone seen/heard any news of the game since? Whatever happened with that lawsuit? Is the game still being made? Please, give me hope, fellow Escapists!

It's been far, far too long.

I'm assuming that it was shelved since they couldn't get a publisher to fund it. Checking the devs web site it looks like they moved on to work on Duke Nukem Forever.

....that is pretty depressing. If you'll excuse me, I believe I'm going to spend the rest of the day sulking now.

It prominently shows Mechwarrior as currently under development on their page. Right up front.

Their wikipedia article says they're working on the console and multiplayer of DNF. ..
They are however not really big on updating news.

Very simple. They got sued, it's in legal limbo.

Mechwarrior/Battletech contains a number of designs lifted from Robotech/Macross, the Warhammer being one of them. Unfortunately FASA studio never formally licensed any of these designs. They had a sort of gentleman's agreemant with Tatsunoko that Tatsunoko would pretend not to notice someone was using their product.

That went in the toilet when Harmony Gold brought Robotech to the US, HG sued FASA practically out of existence. The eventual compromise was that FASA agreed to stop using or re-design the Robotech based mechs (now referred to as the unseen by Mechwarrior heads) and in return HG would stop sueing them into the stone age.

That was the end of the matter for about ten years until that trailer surfaced. The trailer features a Warhammer, aka the Destroid Tomahawk.
Harmony Gold's lawyers rumbled into action and thus the game is in development hell until further notice.

Also, after the debacle of MechAssault/2 it's unlikely any major publisher will pick Mechwarrior back up.

It's not in legal limbo either. That suit was about the unseen, not the game. They just may or may not have them in the game. After all it was a very early trailer of a concept scenario, not a part of the actual game.

Looks like the title's in dev limbo right now, which is unfortunate. I'd rather have a new Mechwarrior title than Duke Nukem Forever.

For fans who haven't heard, Mechwarrior 4 can now be downloaded for free online. Don't worry, it's completely legal. It's not a brand-new title in the series, but it's the next best thing out there.

You know, I forgot all about that. Maybe some MW4 will cheer me up. Thanks.
