Atmosphere, awesome group, but almost totally unknown. At least no one I know knows them.

I could say the best band no one knows about are the search bars, but I won't.

On topic however, I like Lodger and The Lodger.

The Eels, I expected more people that I know to have heard of them, turns out none of them have.
The Eels are decent.

Bands that barely anyone I talk to knows - Modwheelmood, Jeff Lang, Venetian Snares, Chemlab.

Skeletonwitch [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1-Dqjr2X_Ho]. They're blackened thrash metal. Listen to these guys if you're into metal.

Hammerfall- I'm not sure how popular they are in Europe, but they're pretty obscure here in the U.S.

Iced Earth- An excellent not-as-well-known-as-it should power metal band. Their album The Glorious Burden is one of the most fantastic albums, of any band that I know for both it's sound and lyrical content.

Those are the only bands I lisen too often that I would really consider unkown by most.

People in Planes.

I've said this on every thread like this. They are one of the most kick-ass bands out there, but I've never met anyone who's heard of them. In case you're wondering, they're a Welsh Indie band.

EDIT: Two of my favorite of their songs:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kp-Wg0njn7Y - Pretty Buildings
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VOUsw0ygkOI - My Black Widow

I like The Exies and Hot Action Cop a lot- HAC are supposedly coming out with a new album (FINALLY!) some time this year or so. Fever For The Flava is still the most awesome Intercourse With You song [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/IntercourseWithYou] ever written.

I quite like Placebo, but non of my mates like/have even heard of them.
Dude, Placebo are hardly a band no-one else knows about. They're really very popular and I think they're fantastic; you just have rather ignorant mates. I could sing the refrain from Pure Morning ("a friend in need's a friend indeed") at almost anyone from my old school year and they'd say "oh THOSE guys!"

You guys have probably heard of some of these, but I'm into Ska and Indie in a school where people live on rap crap. My fave Ska band is Big D & The Kids' Table, with Catch 22 running close behind. And for Indie, I've recently taken a liking to The Constantines and We Are Scientists, but We Are Scientists are quite well known. There's also an alternative band that I'm strangely attracted to called Hot Hot Heat, they're kinda pop, but I like it :p

I've never met anyone who has heard of Imperative Reaction, but for all I know they're huge in whatever country you're from.

And the day I can find a bunch of people who are into Circus Contraption as much as me, I will quite possibly hug them to death for being so bloody awesome. Yay for twisted circus music!

You need to punch your friends. How could you not know about Steve Vai?? I like Andrew W.K. and only one person I know has even heard of him and that's because I told him about it.

I'm surprised how few people I've met know about TV on the Radio, considering that their last album was named the best album of 2008 by a lot of music reviewers.

The Cruxshadows are fantastic, the music sounds great, the lead singer is really accessible to fans at concerts, and a lot of the music has a positive message without getting preachy or religious.

The 69 Eyes are from Finland, and they're really good. The lead singer has a voice that makes me think of Peter Steele of Type-o Negative (Also a great band)
And more:

Moonspell
Iscintilla
Sonata Arctica
Voltaire - he has comedy and music, He's the evil brain on Billy and Mandy, (Bring me their brains!)
Ego Likeness

There are so many good ones out there, and they don't get as much attention as they deserve.

Korpiklaani is a band which sold the folk metal subgenre to me. I know they have a pretty big fanbase, but I'm pretty sure not a lot of people even among the fans have ever heard Shaman (Jonne Järvelä's previous band), which beats just about every other band at mixing folk and rock.

Also, Rootwater. They're a Polish heavy rock band, which experiments with nu-metal, folk, electro, just about anything they can get their hands on.

And, finally, the legend of Hungarian rock, Omega. The authors of the song which might have been the single best known rock anthem in Eastern Europe ("Girl with a Pearl's Hair", or "Gyongyhaju Lany") and a very good blues-rock band, virtually unknown west of the Oder.
