I assumed it was gender neutral as you can have a female 'brother', but that the brony population was mostly made up of guys in their 20s.

Anyway I've never really seen any brony "spending every damn second of their miserable existence screaming at you" that they're a brony, so to be honest I think this is all making a molehill out of a mountain. Or was it the other way around?
