Wow, you know your shit. I also was going to suggest PvZ, but you took it a far step forward.
Thanks :p It comes from years of having a truly crappy desktop as my main gaming rig -- made in 2004, and obsolete before it rolled off the assembly line. Getting a new laptop was pretty darned liberating XD

How about Civilization 3? Easy to run even for older laptops, it's pretty tolerant of alt-tabbing and offers nearly endless amount of entertainment (assuming you like it obviously :p ). Personally I play my Civ games by playing past the 2050 AD and with all victory modes off - ie. going for total world domination. Will provide ya with ridiculous amounts of play time, single game could keep you going through a whole semester depending on how you play :p

Also, yeah, if you have someone to play with (or even on your own, but it's much, MUCH more fun with a real person rather than the CPU), go for Worms: Armageddon... or Worms Reloaded I suppose, I just I prefer Armageddon myself (can change more options, don't have the weapon box covering your whole damn screen etc.). Don't need internet for it, can play Hotseat or in LAN (just bring an Ethernet cable, they're quite cheap)

Ok, here's a crazy idea. You MIGHT get thrown into a mental institution for such crazy inanity, but here goes: Why don't you try STUDYING in study hall? Eh? Eh?

You know, give that whole 'education' thing a try? Maybe a future? How 'bout it? There's plenty of time after school to waste on videogames.
This. Do your school work so you have time to play games at home.

I need a new way of not doing work in study hall. Anyone know any good games for my crappy laptop? It can't require internet.
Dwarf Fortress is fun [http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/Fun] and if you download a texture pack into it you don't even need to stare at ASCII characters.

Then there are the good oldies: Doom 1&2, Hexen, Quake etc on the FPS side, guaranteed to play on any laptop.

On strategy side, you have your older Civilization games and spinoffs like Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri. On a more decision-based strategy there is the King Of Dragon Pass.

On RPG side of things, stuff like Baldur's Gate, Planescape:Torment and Knights Of The Old Republic.

If you like conquering the world in strategic scale, why not try Europa Universalis, or Hearts Of Iron.

I found JRPGs to be great while you're at school. They don't require a lot of focus, the combat is turned based so every time you take a turn or get in a battle study a little then go back to the game and the enemy waits patiently for your turn so you don't get killed if you look away. Or just bring your gameboy and play pokemon.

Plants VS Zombies is your best bet. I play them to death.

Warcraft 3 is another 1. The single player is good. Get both Reign of Chaos and Frozen Throne.

I also have FATE on my PC. It's harder to find nowerdays but it can really suck you in if you let it.
