Alien still scares me. I think some of it has to do with being terrified albeit fascinated by it as a kid, to the point where if I started walking too fast in a dark room I'd think the thing is behind me. But I also really feel like I know the characters in the film, since they actually act like real people, and don't seem to be making dumb decisions just to move the story along.

Plus the alien has the scariest design I've ever seen, hands down. Even worse, you don't get to see it much. I don't care for the rest of the series that much, and when I watch the first movie I get the impression that the alien was supposed to be evolving throughout the whole film, so the audience doesn't even know if it's seen its most dangerous form. I like that it could be hiding anywhere on the ship, there isn't much you can do about it, and you don't even see it until the end.

Ninja'd in the first reply. Alien is still one of the best horror movies of all time. There's nothing quite like watching it in a dark room with a good surround sound setup. I honestly can't think of another horror movie that really succeeds in being scary the way it does. Most horror movies I spend the entire time laughing. Not that one.

Inland Empire. It's not strictly a horror film, but I found it mentally tiring to watch because of how badly it was frightening me. There is one scene involving a spotlight and a winding road... it's difficult to describe, but anyone who has seen the film will know what I'm talking about. That jump scare was about the most terrifying thing I have seen on film in my life.

Can't say I personally agree with the people saying Alien is scary. I watched it and I had to take a few caffeine pills halfway through to keep myself from falling asleep. It's probably because I've grown accustomed to modern horror films. The only part that I particularly enjoyed about it was how the main characters acted smarter than the majority of horror movie characters. I really only watched it to get background information for my eventual watching of Prometheous.

The Shining, truly a great horror film thanks to Kubrick's genius and Nicholson's performance. The lady does a good job as well and I feel sorry for her for what she had to go through while shooting it >.>.

What is a movie?
A miserable pile of moving pictures.

OT: I nearly pissed my pants when I watched the Blair Witch Project. I think that'll win my award of "Scariest fucking movie ever".

Child's Play.
I'm not scared of it per-say but I don't like looking at the doll. The sequels are not that bad because the doll gets chopped and sewn up again so it clearly looks fake. But.. when that bastard is standing there in all his doll glory *shudders*.

Pretty much this my dad to this day is Obsessed with the Alien series and gotten me to watch them at a very young age and let me just say that Xenomorphs are nightmare fuel to me. That being said i still love being scared by them and enjoy the movies.

I don't really want to watch Blair Witch Project or The Grudge again. They are easily the scariest movies I've ever seen. I couldn't get that bloody stone crumbling sound out of my head for a week!

OT: The first Paranormal Activity fucked me up, 2 was laughably bad, 3 was okay, it had its moments.
Blair Witch is great! I can't really remeber any other movies that REALLY got me.
Horror is pretty boring these days

I hate you for stealing my line but I love your avatar so I guess I forgive you.

Anyway, I remember watching friday the 13th 2 or something when I was like 8 and it freaked me the fuck out. Like sleep in the parents bed for the next two nights freaked out. A few months ago I watched it again with my friend on our drinking night and it was more comedic than anything now, but I am very hard to scare nowadays.

Still haven't watched the Blair Witch Project and Paranormal Activity. Gritty horror movies with shaky camera tend to scare me the most.. even though I haven't watched them.. idk i'm scared :(

Well I remember watching The Exorcist when I was 8 or 9, that was fun...

"They" I also watched when I was young. It did boost my "make sure to close all closets and doors" thing I did. It's about that the monsters in the dark are real.

Even now as a 20 year old I don't feel comfortable sleeping in a room where a closet or the bedroom door is slightly open :/

Now, hardly any horror movie frightens me, because I've seen so many movies I can predict jump scares. And that's all horror movies do these days: jump scares. If a movie is Extra Bad, I can predict dialogue :p.

The only thing that genuinely scared me was the first Evil Dead (I was 6 when I saw it).
The story, the effects, the sound, the camera angles, the possessed people, everything was creepy.
But what really scared me were those point of view shots when something (which we never see) chases after people.

Nowadays, I haven't seen anything that would scare me.
There were a few movies that creeped me out a bit in the recent years, though.
One was The Grudge (the first one, the Japanese one).
Another was Dark Corners. The movie is OK, nothing groundbreaking but there are a few scenes that made shiver and generally feel uncomfortable (the combination of visuals and sound in some scenes is brilliant, in the context of a horror movie).

The original Texas Chainsaw Massacre

The one slasher flick without gore or nudity, but with a fucked up creepy atmosphere so thick you could take a boat ride on it.

Edit: On reflection, I suppose that a good horror movie is not the same thing as a good scary movie, so nevermind my previous examples. I actually can't think of a single movie that I find to be genuinely scary nowadays.

Funnily enough, I find a fairly badly-rated film pretty damn scary: The Tunnel (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1735485/) but I don't think that's the scariest film I've watched, nor the best. Alien, of course, comes very high on the list.
