So, today my friend and I were debating about the term 'weapons'. He was saying that weapons are stuff like guns, knifes and the like. I argued that weapons could be pretty much anything. As long as they could be used to hurt, its a weapon. Paper, chairs, words, etc.

What's your view on the word 'weapon'?

Nope. Weapons are things which were designed with one purpose in mind - to hurt someone or damage something. If primary purpose of an object is not dealing damage, it's not really a weapon.

If something is used to directly cause physical harm to another, it is a weapon

This means that if something, which was not designed to harm was used to injure someone, it would be considered a weapon in that situation

that's just my definition

Wikipedia said:
A weapon is a tool used to apply force for the purpose of causing harm or damage to persons, animals or structures. Weapons are used in hunting, attack, self-defense, or defense in combat and range from simple, prehistoric weapons like clubs, spears, and specially-shaped stones to highly complicated modern weapons such as intercontinental ballistic missiles.

In a wider sense, weapons may include anything used to gain an advantage over an enemy, or to put an enemy at a disadvantage. Examples include sieges, better tactics, and psychological weapons which reduce the morale of an enemy.
Yep, that seems to pretty much have it down.
that sums it up for good. so a rifle used for targetpractive is, in the moments of it's use of that kind, not a weapon, while a hammer used to strike at somebody is.

my oppinio at least.

Tell that to Jackie Chan!

I agree with everyone else in that if it can cause pain and can be brandished, that makes it count as weaponry.

Wikipedia pretty much has it. While there are only certain tools specifically designed to be weapons, just about anything [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ImprovisedWeapon] can be used as a weapon if it becomes neccessary, [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TryingToCatchMeFightingDirty]and the person possesses the correct mindset. Well, basicly anything can be used to harm or hurt others... I once defended myself from a moose with my backpack.

I always wondered why I was allowed to have a pencil (which I could easily kill someone with) in school. Even though they made such an effort to make sure anything that could be used as a weapon wasn't in the school, I still get something that I could use as a weapon. Granted, you wouldn't be able to do much damage beyond hurting a few people, but the same could be said of a pocket knife. It just always seemed stupid that I couldn't have my own pair of scissors (because all of the school scissors didn't cut crap and were a pain since I'm left handed).

So a knife isn't a weapon? The primary purpose of it is to cut food. What about a hammer?

OT: "The gun is the tool. The mind is the weapon". Substitute "gun" with anything you want to hit someone with.
