whats archived mean?

When a forum thread is archived what does that mean?
On a different forum I go to a long lived thread that allowed fans to post pics was archived and now when I try to reply to it it asks me to sign in even though I already am.

I'm not entirely sure, but in forum speak I think that means it is now read only.
