This probably annoys me most about the escapist. Whenever a large title is launched, typically an RPG, the Gaming Discussion is filled with threads for that game.

But we're not here to discuss that. What's your first gaming love? For me, it was Ratchet and Clank Up Your Arsenal. Ratchet and Clank was the first first series I played and I loved the series to no end.

Until my PS2 broke on me, I played Up Your Arsenal and Deadlocked all the time. With friends, going through the campaign, it was so much fun for me. If PS3 would play the games on something higher than 10 FPS, I'd play them again. I was one of the few to get a backwards compatible PS3, but it plays only my Ratchet and Clank games on the lowest frame rate possible.

I love the humor of the game, I love combat, I love the gadgets, the characters, I just love the series in whole.

So we can count a game series? In that case, Civilization. The first Civilization was one of the first games I ever bought for my first PC, and I played the hell out of it and every subsequent game in the series.

Dragon Warrior 3 for the Gameboy.

I played it for years until the internal batteries died.

Probably the very first one would be Populous II on the Amiga. It was just so huge with all these possibilities, and frankly, dumping a volcano on your enemy's back doorstep just never gets old.

I'd also add X-Com UFO Enemy Unknown to that, and just about all of the Final Fantasy series (I know, I know, but I can't help my love for them), but they came after.

Still play these today? Damn skippy. The good old Amiga is plugged into an admittedly small TV in one of the spare rooms, and still works as well today as it did in '89.

Huge fit of envy right here.

To answer the question: I can't answer the question. Amiga's long dead and gone, so is my PS1.
If I could get my hand on one of the latters, though, the WipeOut disk is just waiting for it (the only game I've saved from the trashcan)

Super Mario Brothers 3. I don't play the original anymore. But the third one is still fantastic to this day. It still looks great too.

Wolfenstein 3D for me. I loved it back then, and it was my very first purchase on the Playstation Store.

Not a lot of those 80's games have survived to the present day in terms of me revisiting them, but three have that I can think of off the top of my head.

1. Sid Meier's Pirates!
2. Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar
3. M.U.L.E.

Oh, and Archon as well. Forgot Archon!

Final Fantasy IX. I think I first played it when I was eleven or twelve. Still play it today. Guddamn great game.
Though that was too easy, so here's another:

The original Spyro series. Oh my god. Among the best series on the PS1. Yes please.

Heh, I'm about to make it worse. :) That Amiga has trailed me round for over twenty years. Actually, I lie. My brother has the original Amiga 500 Batman Pack at his house, I have the 1200 I bought myself five years later to settle the arguments over whose turn it was to play Zool. It went to University with me, and survived all the house moves since. It's never once broken or exploded (though there were a few joysticks on the receiving end of my rage over the years).

You can't really plug it into a normal TV screen these days, the picture quality just isn't up to it, but I've got a small portable one lurking round which is perfect for it. And not only do I still have all my games - both originals and those I er... copied from friends - but also all the manuals, posters, copy protection wheels and all that malarkey that came with them.

I could never bring myself to part with it, or any of my old systems. That's why I've still got the original PS1, PS2 and XBox. In fact, I don't think I've ever traded in a game in my life. I mean, what if I wanted to play it again?

Slight thread derailment there, sorry about that. But the Amiga had some games that were certifiable genius.

Civilization III. I've played more hours on that game than pretty much all others combined. Other favourites are Rome Total War & Halo, and the Assassin Creed games, although I've played less of them.

Still play today?
Uh..
Phoenix Wright: Trials and Tribulations? Pokemon White?
I'm honestly not sure.

But if you'd asked me what the first game i'd loved was, i'd probably say Timesplitters 2.
If not that, then Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops or Rome: Total War.

Goddamn, I need to play Rome again soon.

EDIT: Oh, or MechCommander 2.
Since that was what first really got me into gaming.
Timesplitters 2 was the one which brought me into console gaming, and actually enjoying the hobby enough to get my own PS2 and games.

"Rockstar Ate My Hamster"

I loved that game!

Jak and Daxter: The precursor legacy.
First game that I played and loved, I still play it today sometimes, including it's two sequels.

Also Ratchet and Clank. I loved the first 3 games and wish I still had the third one. I played deadzone which was ok but never went any further than that.
The one you mentioned was the second game I think, it had a different name in the UK.

Jagged Alliance 2, although the V1.13 mod has cranked up the complexicity to levels unimaginable back when I first played it around 13 years ago.

There used to be a few dozen guns, now we have hundreds. They also operate more realistically - 7.62x25mm, 7.62x39mm and 7.62x54mm are no longer mushed together into a single "7.62mm WP" ammo type; autoloading Dragunovs and bolt-action M24s differ wildly in their roles, and the implementation of fully automatic suppression fire (soldiers with automatic weapons can spray dozens of bullets in a single burst, causing targets in the affected area to cower in fear, i.e. lose action points and morale) has added a whole new layer of tactical depth to the fights.
