I remember watching a friend playing 7th Guest. And it scared the shite out of me. And I was only watching it being played! I had to walk home that same night, so I ran home singing Lion King songs aloud.

I'd have to say Silent Hill. As much as I love the Resident Evil series, Silent Hill pulled it off. I own 1-4, and only beat 1 and 2. I'm on 3 right now, and can only play it in the daytime. It's just far too creepy. And I know the Fatal Frame series is lauded as scary as hell; I need to look into those games.

The Resident Evil remake for the Cube was brilliantly atmospheric. More than enough shit your pants moments to be had exploring that mansion. Especially with the innovation of the crimson head zombies to make things even more pant wettingly scary. I think mainly the combination of the fixed camera angles, the often helpless feeling combat system and the scarcity of any good ammo is a winning recipe for horror.
You stole what i was gonna say about resident evil. darn it.

I lurve scary games, but Project Zero (or Fatal Frame or whatever) was absolutely too much for me. The video diaries, and the never, ever, feeling safe really did me in. That said, I'm looking forward to trying the Wii one.

Guys who didn't get past Midwich in Silent Hill; you owe it to yourselves to experience more of that game. There's a bit with Lisa in the hospital not too much later that's just utterly heart-wrenching. Honestly, give it another go. It's not like you play survival horror to feel uplifted.

Dead Space until I got the buzz-saw gun thing, took all of the scare out of it knowing that I could destroy everything I come across, but the beginning was scary and atmospheric.

System Shock 2 and Project Zero.

Mostly because the combat was risky without it actually being down purely to shit controls.

Also, Project Zero has some of the most fucked up enemies ever. The ghosts, and the stories behind them are truly warped and disturbed.

Most horror games don't even phase me but, for some reason, I can't stand the Half-Life games. I don't know why, it's just something about those headcrabs...

Ravenholm would have been a very scary level in HL:2 had you not been able to dispatch multiple headcrab zombies with the launching of one circular saw blade I think.

I've heard Dead Space is a little creepy, but I haven't had the chance to play it yet.
Trust me, it's about as scary as my gran on a stairlift - and the controls are approximately as cumbersome. Think Doom 3 with a third of the screen obscured by the main character. Or perhaps BioShock without the good game.

I was 9 years old when resident evil 1 came out and it scared me to the point i couldnt play it anymore (the lab part near the end). Today the graphics are laughable but i cant imagine playing the gamecube remake, with its fantastic graphics as a 9 year old. i DO NOT envy those kids.

Silent Hill 3. It was my first experience with a Silent Hill game and I was not prepared for what I played. It's the creepiest experience I've had.

Dead Space had its moments. More pop-out scares though. Condemned:Criminal Origins, the last house. Almost didn't beat the game because of that damn basement. Silent Hill 1&2, just got in my head. Hmmm...What other games...None really, but I often wonder why I play through scary games because they only end up scaring the living shit out of me.

I need some manly types with me when I'm playing to stop me from being scared. ;P
(Obligatory nerdy attempt at flirting.)

On topic, the scariest game I ever played was Parappa the Rapper. I'm serious, that thing kept me up for days.

The first silent hill game on ps1. I was only 8-9 when that game first came out and couldnt sleep for days. Had bad nightmares about that game and i would not stop playing it. Last real good scare i had was from FEAR. Dead Space gave chills but it began to seem a lot less scary when you realized the pulse rifle(i think thats the name) could destroy anything easily.
