Doom 3, I got it in a bundle with my original xbox, had no idea what I was heading into when I played it. Many a sleepless night lost there

Fatal Frame. I paid 40 dollars for it and I can barely play it because when I do I can't get to sleep that night. The whole time the environment is just beyond creepy and leaves me paranoid even after I've turned off the game.

Fatal Frame = Project Zero, by the way.

I was let down by actually being able to get through the third game in the series. Even during the day and with housemates around, I only got half way through the second.

Definitely the first Silent Hill game. After getting through the sewer section of the game, I couldn't sleep with the lights off for a couple days.

Half-Life was kind of scary. The headcrabs and the lightning-shooting what-ever-their-name-is. Especially when you get to start the experiment and open the portal and the screen goes black and returns to a dark room with those green lightning-shooters. I'll always remember that, along with the occasional sudden HEADCRAB!! I was a kid then, but I'm not a fan of movies or games that are only meant to be scary and nothing else, otherwise. Just can't see the basic idea.

F.E.A.R 2 demo. It wasn't really scary, but the atmosphere, and that woman crying in the background, certainly made you watch your back.

Unfortunerally that was ruined when you realised it was just a normal FPS where you could do a glide-kick and actually see your own feet.

Also I don't play many horror games, so I don't have much to come with.

A lot of "horror" games seem to concentrate on only startling you. F.E.A.R., Dead Space, ect.

Real horror means a tense atmosphere and feeling scared even when there is no apparent threat to the player. Silent Hill series, System Shock 2, a few parts of Thief, and what I think is great: Penumbra. Penumbra is one scary game, and has a creepy atmosphere. It's more survival instead of action. The regretful thing is that they used to offer their first game for free, but after they realized how popular they were, they started charging for everything.

The demo is available though if you're interested: http://www.penumbra-overture.com/demo.php
F.E.A.R. and Dead Space lacking atmosphere? Really?

I mean, maybe Dead Space is guilty of it cause it loses its touch about halfway through the game, but F.E.A.R was dripping with that type of atmosphere. The lighting, the music, the sound cues, it did it all right, making you think stuff was going to happen when it didn't, and then pulling stuff out when you weren't really expecting it. I think it did psychological horror pretty well, since when you think about it, there are only a few instances where Alma can and will hurt you, yet I still felt relief when an army of gun weilding soldiers who 100% of the time would try to kill me showed up because at least they weren't her.

But horror is subjective, so I guess what makes some of us go "woah" makes others go "meh".

Fatal Frame series by far. Only game to ever actually scare me. RE and Silent Hill are a joke.

On a side note, it isn't "most scary", just "scariest"

Dead Space was pretty creepy. I'll admit I was a bit of a pussy and kept the brightness up. I hate not being able to see what I'm aiming at.

Modern Warfare 2.
Those Juggernauts scare the living shit outta me.
I think once I almost had a heart attack on Estate takedown and a JN walked around the doorframe I was next to.
