Manhunt, but I think that?s got more to do with how the gritty realism of the environments and storyline are portrayed. I?m sure gallon for gallon more blood is shed in, say, a Mortal Kombat game but Manhunt just felt more disturbing with it?s violence and ultimately it?s execution scenes produced more of a visceral glee than any Fatality ever has.

I'd give a mention to darkness. You get to eat hearts, for God's sake. Bioshock deserves a mention too, I think (Suchong's death ftw!)

I couldn't help wanting to post in a thread like this one as it seems, as usual, violence is mixed up with gore and their immediate meanings in this context seem to become mingled as one.

I'm honestly not inclined to go looking for a name but someone actually quoted Mario as pretty violent and I believe they've most likely got the right idea, just because something is cartoony or old-skool (pre-32 bit?) doesn't mean it can't be uber violent.

Most games seem to specialise in some kind of violence or other, whether vehicular manslaughter (bonus points for who remembers how many kills that takes in Carma 2), pummelling someone of a different nationality (Street Fighter for example), shooting things (Duke, R-Type) or cartooney stomping (Mario etc).

Having said that, to keep in with the spirit of the thread I have to say that I don't believe that I could classify any one single game as (specifically) the most violent I've ever played but I reckon possibly (for sheer kills-a-minute) would have to be Time Crisis, or Duck Hunt. Those lightgun games are all about popping people as fast as you can think.

QFT. There is no other. Only game I've ever played where it was the violence in and of it's self that I found disturbing and not the context.
Another vote for SoF. How can Gears possibly be bloodier than SoF? You can shoot off limbs, blow out intestines (literally), and there's even a gun that makes people expand until they blow up a la Octopussy.

I know that you can chainsaw limbs off in Gears, but disembowelment wins.
That was Live and Let Die, actually.

For 5 bucks on steam, Alien Shooter: Vengence is the most violent game ive ever played, and surprisingly amusing in a very simple way. I say this simply because of persistent floors spattered with gore, and how you pretty consistently, through 90% of the games play time, kill 5-20 Aliens per second.

Carmageddon is probably the next most violent, while Postal deserves mention for being the most...psychologically damaging. Dousing someone with a gas can, igniting them, chasing them until the fall unconscious, pissing on them until there doused, then watching them get up and doing it again to there charred body...thats something...special.

While there have been more violent moments in certain games, I think the most non-stop gratuitously violent game I have ever played was Bloodrayne 2.

Manhunt (1 and 2)
God of War (all of 'em)
Any Suda 51 game.
Fantasmagoria (spelling?)
Soldier of Fortune
Bioshock.
Yea that's about it.

SoF2. Hands down. If you like, you can kneel over an NPC and hack at them with a knife past their face, through their skull until grey matter comes out. And it's completely gratuitous and unnecessary.

At least in Manhunt the gratuitous violence is there for a reason. There isn't really any justification in Soldier Of Fortune. Also, the first game was pretty racist.

Postal and Carmageddon. I'm surprised only 3 people mentioned Postal so far.

Honorable mention goes to the original Prince of Persia and those man-sized slicers

We <3 Katamari. Countless people getting crushed by a giant pre-mature star, Being piled up on by everyday objects like wooden fences, cows, race cars, buses, Godzilla and even countries. Their bodies being mangled by the rolling of the brightly coloured death trap. After the 10 minutes or so of hell the rolling comes to a stop. Everyone adhered to the sphere scream and cheer with delight. All of a sudden, the star begins to grow, turning white with extreme heat. Everyone is sacrificed to fuel the star. The prince is then sent out by the king of the cosmos to kill again. Oh the humanity...

I don't remember his death... he slapped a Little Sister and got faceraped by a Big Daddy's drill, yeah? I think that was it...
