I don't listen to music much (and especially not on the go), but I'd chalk it up to popularity. It seems like a pseudo-retro trend is going around with all these hipster kids and what not.
I have the exact same rule. I live in Oakland and commute to SF via bike three times a week for school. Some of the places I ride through are totally sketch, and the last thing I want is for people to know I have an mp3 player.Craorach said:Like laptop bags and phone holders, I have a rule with headphones.
Small, cheap, as hard to notice as possible. Wire goes down inside my shirt and into my pocket, I don't mess around with it more than I have too.
Wearing something that screams "I like expensive gadgets like the ones I have on me right now" is pretty much waving a "Mug Me" sign over your head in neon.

I will admit I bought the beats on some bad advice from a trendy friend who said they were "amazing!" If you have only used cheap earphones then they will be amazing, but for the price I could have gotten much better headphones, but oh well.4RM3D said:I have always used headphones since the invention of the walkman.
Beats and Skull Candy made the headphones more popular (again) it seems. Like the iPod did for MP3-players. Now everybody has one or wants one.
