What's with the gay threads lately?

Gaming websites would actually strike me as perfect, as gamers (without wishing to make a too sweeping generalisation) tend to be young and socially liberal, and therefore much more comfortable having discussions about these topics.

Not even bringing up the problems with generalizations, I'm going to have to disagree with the socially liberal part. At least, not on this forum. I've seen plenty of threads that were rife with homophobia and/or misogyny. And many posters seem to expect strict heteronormative gender roles, and are hostile when these roles are challenged.

We get a lot of the "I don't care about gays as long as they aren't faggy" kind of tolerance, which is a shame.

Maybe it's a bigger problem on other sites other than this one. I wouldn't know. But The Escapist has always seemed to me like a very progressive place, and the majority of posts I've seen with homophobic/misogynistic material in them I've had the distinct impression were using that material to be ironic and making fun of the homophobes, rather than the homosexuals.

I might not the only one who notices it, but i may be the one of the first who will point this out. Could someone explain why are there so many forum threads revolving around homosexuality nowadays? Why is it such a hot topic, that gets discussed more than actual gaming threads, on a GAMING site?

Look, don't think of me as a homophobe, but is this an appropriate place for such discussions, on this kind of regular basis?

The same could be told about the samey "meat" threads, where it's always the same - vegans take turns to piss boiling oil on carnivores and vice versa, lol. (again no offence)

One person questions their sexuality and then like a chain of dominoes we're all sniffing each others poop shoots questioning our own.

PLease nnotice the vast array of "Non gaming related" forums that are in the forums of the gaming site. We don't only discuss games here, nor was the forum made to only discuss games. That's about as simple as I can phrase it

Well it doesn't take a genius to notice that you're in the off-topic discussion forum where everything, but games is talked about because theres an entirely seperate forum to discuss gaming and all the things that surround it. Also not too long ago the gay marriage passed in New York so thats probably the reason for the influx in topics about the subject.

My Little Pony does turn people gay! I always dismissed that as random hate-mongering, but it seems to make sense. The gay threads all started right after the pony threads. Damn it, damn it all. It's too late for me now... I've watched every episode twice.

For what it's worth, I support same-sex romance in games. If you're going to have romance content at all, there should be inclusive options.

Really, these threads come up constantly when there's a flood of topics that don't revolve around gaming. This forum has had an off topic section since forever, OP, so...if you really can't figure out how those two are connected...then...this is a lost cause.

I think I've worked it out, and the answer makes me feel old and I hope doesn't upset any fellow forumites because I mean no offence. The answer I believe is quite simple actually. Most users on this site are teens. And the issues that matter to teens are not the same as those that matter to 20-somethings, 30-somethings and so on.

Teens are all about disagreeing with the man, finding their own voice, identity and opinions, sexuality, cliques, wearing trousers so their underwear is on show (which actually earns them derision and laughter from everyone else), bullying, school issues, the opposite sex, and for some reason on this site, porn, rape and incest seem to continually recur as frequent topics which is really troubling and I can't understand it, teens or no. Teens love and hate things with incredible passion though and argue sometimes just for the sake of wanting to be heard.

Thus it stands to reason that as the majority of Escapists are teens, the majority of forum topics will be created by them and be on issues they consider important (ie. the above).

I'm honestly not trying to offend though I realise broad stereotypes can't but. Saying that, the above is true so I apologise but if you're a teen, that's the deal. Now watch and they're gonna disagree with me. If you're 19 or younger, reading this and disagree with me, bookmark this post and come back when you're 25 and you'll see I was right.

I don't like it when people dislike 'carbon copy pastiches' simply because they break gender roles. Nor do I like people who resort to homophobic or misogynistic name calling because they can't verbalize their feelings appropriately.

There aren't more homosexuality threads than gaming threads, first of all. There is a whole subforum with nothing but gaming threads.

Anywho, I think it's more Sexuality that keeps coming up than just homosexuality.

And the sciences of sexuality are very, very interesting.

There is a Gaming section to the forums, but there is also other sections, such as off-topic, where you can discuss other things as well.
