What's wrong with Sonic Unleashed?

I thought Sonic Team almost had it with Unleashed. They really did.
The daytime levels were beautiful, but the Werehog levels.... lacked in fun. It was a completely different game...
As Yahtzee stated in his review, we play Sonic games TO PLAY AS SONIC.
I think I can safely say that cutting out all the rest of the characters except Sonic and Eggman. Tails, Knuckles, Eggman, Metal Sonic and maybe Shadow can enter the game, but not all at once. Shadow, despite being a latecomer, should probably still be welcome, as he plays almost exactly like Sonic.

If Sega just remade and concentrated on the daytime levels of Sonic Unleashed, destroyed the hubworld and all the unnecessary characters, it would be an instant hit.

He was too goddamn hard to control. That's my frustration with Sonic in the current "console generation". I understand that Sonic is fast, he's named Sonic after all, but in the old games he was controllable, and the thrill came from the dangerous terrain and the unexpected but simple & welcome challenges of the level. Not making him so fast you can't see what the hell you're doing, where you're going, or give yourself those few seconds to prepare for what lays ahead.

I played a bit of Sonic Unleashed and I couldn't get enough of a grip to feel like I was playing something FUN. It was too rushed and poor gameplay mechanics combined with him going "YEAH!" "UGH!" "WHOAAAAAA" every three seconds doesn't serve to do anything but frustrate the living hell out of you. Yes, we understand: Sonic is vibrant and free-spirited, but we got that when he DIDN'T TALK, too.

Unfortunately, the only good Sonic game that's come out recently was Sonic Chronicles by Bioware. They kept the battle system and cast streamlined, and with the plot, kept it simple, kept it true to what Sonic was. Extra unfortunately, the Sonic Team doesn't seem to be hearing that we, as fans of the franchise, don't want a mashup of whatever flew into your head at the time, we want something clean, simple, and if you have to insert your gimmicks with gameplay, make sure they WORK.

I doubt it'll happen anytime soon, though. D:

On a relevant note, is Sonic chronicles any good? I've been pondering that game for a while, can't say its worth a new console but if I can find a few good games and a good Sonic game I wouldn't mind paying good money.

I've been a sort of exile from the Sonic world, waiting in hope that something that looks and sounds half decent will arrive and revive him a bit. Chronicles at least looks like something new, and if its any good I'm interested.

Yes! It's quite good, I've replayed it a number of times. There are 10 characters to play as (each character has a special ability and there are times you switch up your team as the world requires specific abilities to move about such as Big's shield to pass through smog, Knuckles' Climb, Shadow's Transport, Sonic's ability to go through shuttle loops). You use 4 characters in battle and you'll ease into what combination works best for you. It's turn based combat, but the POW (special) moves are like the Elite Beat Agents style rhythm tapping, but it keeps you in the battle.

It's not too long, it's not too short, and the characters are true to themselves. ^_^ I recommend it highly.

The problem with it is that it is a Sonic game. They have been terrible from the very beginning.

Still, homophobic slurs are never cool. You should sock your friend in the face.

As far as I know, the inclusion of the werehog is what got it a bad rap. That wouldn't be so bad if it weren't for two things:

1. There was practically no reason for including the werehog. I don't even remember if it was actually explained how draining the emerald's power from Sonic turned him into a werehog. As far as I'm concerned, they could have not included that at all and the story would still make sense.

2. The werehog mechanics are a plain ripoff of God of War. No originality whatsoever.

The wolf aspect fucking sucked the controls felt like shit, and I was just praying for them to let me play as normal sonic, yet they stuck me with Manpig for 5 hours.
