I have nothing but respect for the Norwegian Police, they are sadly over worked and underpaid and there isn't enough of them though.

I recognize their merit.

Sure, some of them probably spend too much time harassing teenagers for no reason and more focused on passing tickets (because of retarded systems that reward that behavior) than actually dealing with the rampant crime.

But they are awfully underpaid. So much that suicides among the force are many times higher than in the general population.

So much underpaid that they can't afford the stupidly overpriced ammunition - therefore they are carrying a firearm they can't train with everyday. If I take a random police officer on the street, there is a good chance he hasn't qualified with his firearm in the last 2 years.

They are so underpaid that I understand that they will hesitate to save my life.

I understand that they might take 10 minutes instead of 4 min to get to emergencies.

They are the people in this country that get shot at, arrest the criminals just to be forced to release them because they haven't been caught in the act.

Long story short, if a police officer told to my face he is not obliged to defend me I will accept the terms and conditions.

I've seen some pretty nasty stuff on youtube, mainly from US cops who think they're above the law because they've got a gun and a taser
That's one of the reasons I like the idea of Concealed Carry licenses. Anyone you see might be licensed to carry a gun. Both civilians and the police keep each other in check so that nobody does anything stupid, IMO.

I like the Police. I hate assholes. There's a bunch in every profession, but when you give them power they tend to stand out more.

I had an idiot friend kick over an advertisement board in front of a cop van that she didn't know was there, and all he did was throw the sirens on for half of a second to tell her not to be an idiot.

My interactions with police here in Canada have generally been positive, but I'm guessing that's because I don't try and mouth off to them just because they have some authority.

Edit: A lot of my issues aren't the cops so much as some of the stupid laws they have to uphold.

Hmmm well I have my own reasons for my opinion but in Northern Ireland some can be pretty corrupt. Also some can be extremely biased depending on who you are. Though alot are decent enough.

The police force in England are so underpowered its untrue. They've been nerfed repeatedly over the last 30 years of patches by that developer we all love to hate "the government" - who, by the way, keep promising this great new game but postpone it every 4 years. The new OP faction are 'the minorities', there must be a bug when it comes to the justice system because they get away with what other people cant.
As someone who is soon to graduate as a fully-fledged UK Police Officer, whilst being an avid gamer, I have to say that you, sir, have become my new personal hero with that reply!

In Australia they seem pretty honest and fair. I respect them and the law and they respect me. They're just doing their job.
Pretty much. They're generally good natured and don't seem to be out to get you. Never seen one looking to hassle someone for no particular reason. So long as you're obeying the law, you're fine. Hell, in some circumstances even if you're breaking the law you're fine. The closest any have come to hassling me has been saying hello to me and my friends as they were walking past 'cause we were in school Uniform at the local shopping centre at lunch. Fully legitimate reasons of course, but they didn't even pull us up on it.

Now, this all goes out the window for those ones that hand out parking tickets, but they're a whole other story.

that has been my experience with police here in the US (chicago specifically)
though i do live in a pretty good neighborhood.

and then there was that one time where i was picked up for curfew (i thought it was 11:00 pm, turns out on sundays its 10:30) while i was walking up the street to get some cola. after telling the police this, they returned from dropping me off 20 minutes later with a 2 liter bottle of coke.

my friend and i proceeded to laugh our asses off.

The Gardai in Ireland are generally ok. Of course a profession where you have power over your fellow man will attract dicks but they tend to be nice people. Unfortunately their job involves catching criminals which as you can imagine doesn't make them popular with said criminals and leads to ingenius phrases such as "oink" "pig" and my personnel favourite "I'm going to slice myself off a side of bacon". These phrases were then adapted by wannabe hard men, who mutter it well out of the earshot of the police.
I saw a mobie about a gardai in Ireland once, it was named (aptly) the guard. He was a world class olympic swimmer, a crack shot, and a defender that racism was an intregrated part of his cultural heritage.

Beyond the racism thing, he seemed a pretty bully guy.
Yeah that was really popular round here. He was kind of the typical countryside garda. He was a nice guy just completely backwards and a little bit racist, kind of like my grandmother (without the guy bit obviously)

South African here.

The police...eh I just don't know. From the state of the country I'd say pretty fucking useless although from the state of the government I'd say they probably aren't well funded anyways.

That film was fucking insane I loved it, although you missed out the part about him stealing drugs of corpses and hiring hookers.

OT: Yeah I like the police, they seem like good guys who do an important job.

This might come as a great surprise, but that movie, and The tv-series Father Ted is rather big overe here in Sweden. So is Dylan moran.... and not only 'cause o' the roguis brogue. But on acount of his dark humour striking resonance in the hearts of the bitter swedish nation.

Good not great. Most of the problems I have with them stem from some of the more stupid laws that they're supposed to carry out, but you'll never see much police hate from me.

I live in the downtown area of my city. Home owner. So there are homeless, and drug addicts, etc... Its an urban environment. Goes w/the territory. Its mostly a nice area, but its downtown in a city and so there are desperate elements that will go very far to get what they need and cross any line to do it.

My next door neighbor has been broken into repeatedly by different people (dunno why they pick that person's house over mine, but they always seem to. We've had one attempt at my place, and it was just an attempt (he was scared off)). Anyhow, in those burglaries of my neighbor's home, the culprits (or most of them anyways) were almost always caught thanks to quick response police (some times w/the help of watchful neighbors). Interestingly, the breakins were always in the day time too. But they were caught due to attentive police. Who knows what would have happened to my neighbor otherwise. In some areas, you *need* attentive/inqusitive police, just to be able to sleep w/out worry. Crime is a problem where i live, so i'm happy if a cop recognizes that someone who isn't part of the neighborhood is around and asks them some questions if only to just let them know that cops are nearby. I would not want them to racially profile or anything dumb like that, but if they are familiar w/the neighborhood and know this person isn't part of it, then its nice to know that they'll be curious and make their presence known before moving on.

The police have changed over the decades in the U.S. An interesting book on the subject is called 'cop in the hood', if i remember correctly. Its this author who tries to ride along w/cops to learn more about them but fails to learn anything productive, so instead - he becomes an actual cop himself, in the bad part of boston no less. He sees a lot of negative things from the inside and w/some research compares it to periods of better policing in U.S. history. Interesting read. Was featured on some national radio show (was how I heard about it, can't remember which radio show it was though).

The South Australian cops do a decent job. They?re sometimes a little overzealous, but all in all they do a good job considering the type of A-hole teenagers they must deal with.

Yea I'm aware of father Ted's big following abroad, but Dylan Moran is suprising, he's actually slipped off the radar a bit here, but he is very funny. This is vastly off topic but another Irish show Mrs Browns boys is becoming quite popular outside of Ireland these days
