What's your opinion on Gordon Ramsay?

I was watching Hell's Kitchen reruns with my friend today when she started getting upset. She said that Ramsay was a bully and probably traumatized the chefs for life when he yelled at them. I explained that when a season starts, the chefs are lazy and cook poor meals, so Ramsay gets furious and yells at them. As the chefs start realizing that sloppy work isn't tolerated, they start improving their game and consequently are happy with their work (and don't get on Ramsays bad side). If they get lazy again, then a quick bout with Ramsay reminds them of how important quality service is. If they don't improve despite constant reminders, then they get kicked out of the dinner service to wallow in their shame. So I ask you escapists, what do you think of Gordon Ramsay?

He's just doing what he gets paid for. He's known for yelling and swearing so that's what he does. I still find him hilarious though.

He's entertaining and that's that. I don't watch the show often but I do enjoy it. He's a TV personality. He might not be like that in his private life.

I think he's bloody brilliant. If there's a way to handle people in a hectic environment, which a busy kitchen is, then that's it. He instills discipline and urgency, if they can't tolerate the pressure then they likely won't last long in the same environment in the working world.

Fuck kitchens, I spent two weeks with my mum in a school kitchen and the stress is too much to cope with. It's meeting deadlines, safety standards, health standards, quality standards all whilst weaving in and around other people with potential tasty hazards.

He's an asshole and I don't like him, but he's needed when most people are afraid to tell you if your food is shit.

Your friend sounds like she's nover worked in a busy kitchen before. They run on swearing, abuse, blood, sweat and tears.......and cigarettes! A busy kitchen is probably the worst place I've ever worked, as well as one of the best. You finish a 12 hour shift, absolutely buzzing, unable to sleep!

And Gordon Ramsey, I thinks he's brilliant at what he does, which is making Americans cry! Hells Kitchen USA is becoming a little formulaic though. Keeping in TV-worthy people and making pretty much every team challenge even and tense until the final two people is getting old and predictable.

I prefer Kitchen Nightmares. When people he's trying to help turn on him, and he hits back with a serious verbal slapping, before out-cooking all the chefs, is classic!

I'm sure he's a pretty cool guy.

But the shows he's in are very formulaic, and very staged.

and yet I can't stop watching them.

Love the show, he's so honest that it's refreshing. Doesn't temper any opinion and will start confrontations with people. It's almost cathartic when he throws down with one of the contestants I hate.

He's an entertaining, brutally honest cuss-machine. In all fairness most head chefs are probably like Ramsey; cooking requires skill and precision and when you add to that a large kitchen with multiple orders and customers who may refuse to tip or pay if you take too long or if the food is bad that creates a very stressful environment especially if you're running a kitchen and the place is falling apart. Thus it's probably hard to switch off which would explain why Ramsey behaves the same in Kitchen Nightmares (that and he's using his own time and money to help people improve their business).

Love that show. The way he just beats his arguments into them.
The best show is Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares, the british version which is way better then the american Kitchen Nightmares

I think he's awesome. If I was in his position, I would be pretty pissed off too if some of the chefs in my kitchen attempted to send out raw meat.

I find he's a lot more cool and collected on Master Chef though. Probably because it doesn't (normally) take place in the kitchen of a very busy restaurant. Plus most of the people on there actually seem to know what they are doing.

I have to agree here, I saw both Hell's Kitchen and Kitchen Nightmares, and I have to say he's a scary man to piss off, but he makes his points.

I recently saw a commercial for Ramsey's new line of cooking stuff sold at K-Mart here it is.

Got nothing against him, professional kitchens are madhouses and a lot of the places he "fixes" require his determination and indeed "bullying" to get the point across.

Plus if Ramsay wasn't so famous we would never have heard about this:

From what I have seen from his Reality Show, he is a hard ass that demands the best from his chefs. How much of this is real or acting, I don't know.

He seems like a loveable chap only reason why he yells so much in Hell's kitchen is because it´s an american show, they need drama(watch season 9 and you will see what I mean...). I would recommend you to watch "Gordon's great escape" where he travels around the world trying out new things,he acts really nice in that show.

I think he's kind of a twat. I work in a kitchen, and I understand that things can get real hectic real fast, but I have no patience for people who go immediately to screaming. There are only a few occasions where my boss has actually yelled at the kitchen staff, and it's when they did something wrong after he's told them a million times the proper way to do it. It's incidents of willful incompetence or outright laziness that inspire the Ramsey-like rage to break out

I get that it's part of his gimmick and it's a lot of the reason people watch the show, but yelling and screaming like a god damn five year old and resorting to petty insults is just dickish behavior. Where I work, if anyone just jumped right in a kitchen workers face and started yelling over a matter that could easily be resolved by calmly saying "hey dude, you fucked that up", then the only thing he'd get is a punch in the mouth
