I started on 'ancient' games.

Though playing the first Star Wars game was an eye bleeding blast.
I have fond memories of it...

I'm just amused that 20 odd years and thats still the showpiece level in every Star Wars game, lol

When my Dad passed away he left me his entire video game and console collection which has everything from Pong to Turbo Graphx 16. I pretty much own a playable gaming museum. At Christmas we do a random game draw and play them together in memory of my Dad. This year we played Venture on Colecovision, Subroc on Colecovision, Faery Tale on Sega Genesis, Mutant League Hockey on Sega Genesis and Betrayal in Antara for PC.

That's actually super sweet- I don't think I've played anything from that era on the original hardware- have there been any hidden gems among those in your opinion?

Also, it's finally happened. After hounding the Huns for a year and a half, my wingmen shooting down Ernst Udet, me downing Lothar Von Richtofen, being challenged to a duel by Werner Voss and besting him, none other than Manfred Von Richtofen- the Red Baron himself- has challenged me to a 1 on 1 duel. I get to his prearranged spot and the conniving rogue has brought two wingmen along with him as insurance! So I gain height above his flight, then roar down at tremendous speed on the formation. I only have time for one pass... better make it count...

What is and is not a gem is up to the personal taste of the individual. I personally liked Venture and Faery Tale the best out of the lot, but I tend to like RPG's and fighting games more than others while My brother liked Mutant League Hockey the best. Betrayal in Antara wasn't bad either, just old, slow turn based combat. I think i had the most fun playing venture and Faery tale as I like the panic that sets in when running away from monsters. The *time to panic music* when monsters attack is awesome.

Venture reminds me of the first Zelda game in how you go about clearing zones, but is more difficult to get away from the hall monsters due to it being more difficult to control your character. As the guy who narrated the video above on it stated, it may be intentional to increase the difficulty. Venture is like a mix between the first Zelda and Berzerk with a green hall monster similar to Evil Otto that comes after you. I like games that can invoke a panic. :D

Regularly, though I stop at NES/original Gameboy/SNES/Genesis titles because they are rather easy to get and play with modern controllers.

Would love to get my hands on a good Amiga 500 emulator, though. There were some absolutely awesome titles back then.

Maybe this will help? Just be sure to fire it up using Chrome:
