So far as I know, even the people who live in New Jersey hate New Jersey.
I've lived here my whole short life and pretty much everyone I know that lives here hates it (including me). It just isn't fun. There's trees everywhere, people drive like they can spare getting a car totaled and our educational funding just took a noise dive.
It's not nor ever will be cool.
Myth confirmed.
I'm from Jersey too, It depends what type of person you are, I like all the trees for backyard paintball, I use back roads to avoid shitty drivers and 3min red-lights, and education took a dive cause of the asshole Superintendents pocketing 6-figures.
What people from other states see most, is the tourist holes like Seaside Heights and Belmar, which as seen in "Jersey Shore" gets the Staten Island run-off. New Yorkers, take a look at your self: You got the city, and Lake George, then a couple hundred square miles of nothing.
I mean, we still got 10mi between Wawa's, Six Flags and Hurricane Harbor, sweet fishing spots, fresh water sharks, Giants/Jets New stadium, Sandy Hook, Asbury Park, Leonardo(Clerks), Weird NJ, a military base for almost every branch, Englishtown and Freehold Raceways, Ferry's to NYC and DE/MD, Atlantic City(if you can stand it), and
Pork Roll. We also got George Washington on both sides of our state quarter. It's fun if you grow an imagination and drink some tap-water. I honestly can't think of any place I'd rather live.
