As soon as somebody brings up Hitler or the Nazis, they have immediately lost the argument. For instance, that facebook group that has the title of "Germany, you won Eurovision but we beat you in WW2" instantly loses.

If you can make your opponent understand your point that's probably as close to a "victory" as you're going to get. Relatively few people ever change their point of view after an argument, most people just don't have the humility required to admit they were wrong or that the other person has a valid point.

I suppose when I am able to change an opinion someone else has that is when I have won an argument in real life.

The only possible way to win an argument online is not to get into an argument online. That is the way I see it anyway.

When do I declare victory.

Either when my opponent agrees with my position, I have learned something, or my opponent acknowledges he has learned something.

You see, because I do not so much argue for demolishing an opponent, but to rather correct gaps in their (or my) knowledge, and to inform those listening in that the other guy might be talking BS.

False information is detrimental to real knowledge and truth. False information, when it surfaces, must be corrected. Why? For the good of all of us.

I am never happier, than when someone can show that what I think I knew or suspected, is false. And on the other hand, if I can't show it, I don't really know it. Arguments with other knowledgeable people are a good place to see if I truly know something or not. Arguments with not so knowledgeable people correct misinformation and hopefully, remove ignorance.

I consider myself to have won either completely or partially if the person I'm arguing with concedes all or some of my points. Since this particular type of argument isn't a zero-sum game, though, I don't consider them to have lost anything (nor myself, if I'm the one making concessions). If one or both of us simply says "balls this" and stops talking, or if we agree to disagree, I consider the argument dropped with no outcome. I guess I could consider sometimes people dropping arguments because they don't want to concede due to pride, but since I try never to do that myself, I also try not to assume it of others. Sometimes, arguments can just go nowhere good.

Alternately, I consider myself to have won (and they to have lost) if I present my arguments in a way that convinces other people. When it's a public or semi-public debate, you can be forgiven for treating it as zero-sum, and just dropping the argument doesn't affect the results.

When the opponent starts babbling incoherent BS and has no arguments for his view anymore.

When I've spread my forces thin across Europe.

Seriously, when I've proven myself right or when they've given no points to the contrary. I'll admit to a loss if I've lost, but that wasn't the question now, was it? The problem also doesn't seem to occur too frequently.

I declare victory when I see my foe hanging from a noose.

Okay... not literally, but the figurative equivalent form of that is typically good enough. I don't get into arguments very often however that are serious enough for me to want to seek a "victory" or anything.

If you declare yourself the winner of an argument on the internet then you have probably just lost.
And with that, I just lost the game.

OT:
Very much like the one I quoted said, I you don't really win arguments online. And offline I'm happy if I convince the other part that I'm right, and I'm happy if the other part manages to show me that I'm actually wrong, so I don't walk around being wrong anymore. Either way I win, right?
