When do you sort through your loot?

This mostly applies to the RPG genre but really it can apply to any game that includes finding gear/loot. When do you typically inspect it and replace items you have or organize it? Do you do it on an item by item basis or do you tend to clear an entire dungeon/area and then dig through all your goodies afterward?
I am notorious for finishing an entire area/quest/dungeon what have you and then looking through new gear at the end. I don't like to slow down my adventuring digging through stuff and I rather like having a big pile of goodies at the end.

Normally around the point where I become over encumbered... I'm lazy, I know.

yerp this, and thanks to modded assortment systems, it makes it easy as a couple clicks to sort out what stuff is worth vs the weight it brings down upon me, and i drop stuff according to whatever is best at the time.

Generally speaking, I tend to know what loot would constitute an upgrade for me or my companions when I get it. So if I find an item that I think might be worth switching to I'll check it out and/or equip it.

I've gotta say, though, I do like games that have a "junk bin" like the Dragon Age games. In both of them I tend to sort right when I open a chest or loot a bunch of bodies after a fight. That way when I get to a shop all I have to do is push the button to sell all junk rather than going through a massive list making sure I don't sell something that would be an upgrade.
