When does a thread become stale?

Let's ignore the threads that aren't interesting to you.

Do you post on all the other threads or do you have some rules made up that rule out some of them?

I don't reply to threads when they are too long. (like 8 pages or something)
Nobody will read my reply anyway as nobody wants to read through 8 pages of ranting and whining before finally having a chance of reading my superior advanced form of interlectual wittiness.

I don't reply to threads where the creator of the topic is obviously trolling no matter the fact how interesting the topic might turn out.

I don't reply to threads where language is a serious issue. I know my language isn't that good either so probably I'm morally wrong with that, but as soon as I have difficulties reading the original post because it lacks punctuation, case sensitivity or uses forms of internet slang I don't recognize and have to look up even the most important thread is just not interesting enough to be followed.

So what about you?

That's kinda made me chuckle.
Is your opinion that bad that by mentioning it you sound like an idiot?
And even more, if you know you are going to sound like an idiot and therefore you are not going to mention your opinion - well then you have just proven that you aren't an idiot at all.

So this contradiction was fun, but maybe I didn't quite get what you meant.

So basically what motivates me to post in a thread?
Normally when I feel I have something to add- be it trying to phrase a sentiment in the thread better or maybe add a new perspective or help defend an opinion I share or just argue with people on a topic I know about and they obviously dont (i.e. when I get to look like a smartass).

Whatever interests me. I prefer shorter OPs, so I don't have to read for five minutes before being able to make a good reply. I hate when people only read the title and reply. Or don't fully read the OP. Because they'll never make a good response.

This too. There's no point in replying to a thread about car engines, because I don't know two shits about that.

I mostly reply to controversial threads. God I love controversial stuff.

If the OP is too long, I'll generally skip it unless it's extremely well-written and interesting. Other than that if I think I can contribute something I will. I don't even mind repeat threads. They can be good for seeing new perspectives on older issues.

Threads become stale to me when the "Too Cool" brigade starts posting their cute little "Oh it's THIS thread again" posts.

I think copies of original threads are pretty stale. That first thread about "The last enemy you beat is now your roommate" was cool. But when you start getting to "The last enemy you beat is now your brother-in-law's aunt's cousin's co-worker's sister's boyfriend's boss" it's terribly lame. I avoid threads that are nothing more than a rehash of someone's better original post like the plague. I don't even want to add to their view count.

I used to post on all threads. Man, those were the days...

Nowadays I just post when I notice I have a slightly unique perspective. At least, that goes for the Off-topic and Gaming Discussion forums. In User Reviews, I'll post my daily film review, and I'll post on other ones that I think I could help out or that I want to offer my opinion to.

I remember us vying for first post. I even remember the one time I made an edit to trap you >:)

I don't have a particular rule. Sometimes I post, other times I figure what I have to say has been said way too many times ahead of me. It comes at a whim really. Like right now!
