its subjective, really...

different people see it in different ways, be it post count, content, or the amount of time on the site (as you can see above)

personally, I use the date of when the person joined (about 6 months I guess), but there are new members which can be confused with the older ones...

EDIT: another good indicator: if you remember Unforgotten Realms, you arent considered new :p
Aww man, I loved that show. Has Rob ever actually gotten around to properly continuing it? I haven't checked in half a year or so.

On topic: It depends. As a rule of thumb, I'd say someone who's been here for more than six months is no longer new.

I'm still 'new', but I've been here for years.

It's because I don't post as much.
The second reason is that this place has SO MANY MEMBERS, it has no noticeable cliques or groups of friends. So a lot of people are stuck in that perpetual "new person" feeling.

Doesn't stop me, though.

I've been here for nearly two years and have nearly 6,000 posts, I claim myself a regular.

I guess my point is being active for more than six months or having 1000 posts. I wonder the number of people who've only made less than 100 posts and left their accounts to rot...

I don't know, I guess when you've made a few hundred posts, been here a few months and have a couple of friends?

I've been here for years and still have no friends, woe is Woo...

Post something with content or originality. If you just spam through "waht is your favourite ..." and other stupid meaningless threads no one reads, no one will recognise you. There are very few Members whose faces are well known and accepted, the most is a grey mass of boredom and zomiethreadposters.

Discussion value: What do you feel makes you a permanent resident of the community?
Being a mod ;)

This place has a lot of history, and there's some grouping. It used to be a really small, close group until Yahtzee came along. I still don't feel like I belong among the people who have been here a few years, but that's understandable. It's a big community, and if I recognize you you're definitely not new. The thing is, why do you care? Why not just have fun and get friends, you certainly don't seem to have a problem posting.
Darn, well I'll never be a mod >.<

I dunno, I was just wondering is all.

As far as I know, the oldest member is a hacker that messed with the registration date and the highest post count I've seen is Sassafras.
What about that Vaudevillian Veteran person?

I think Sassafras is the current winner with around 60,000+ posts, but there are some that are close to him.

Oldest member, I'm not sure, but I do remember some person with a Dead Space-themed NES avatar who joined on 2004. I know Virgil joined around 2002, but since he works for the Escapist I don't quite count him.

It depends. For example, I've been here for over a year, but spend most of my time at the Bethesda forums or at most lurking here - which is reflected in my post count. So, despite the length of time I've been a member, I'd still call myself a "new guy".

Additionally, a high post count doesn't make you a Veteran or anything. It just means you post a lot.

I'm a bit of a lurker but since I officially signed up to the site over a year ago now I suppose I wouldn't be counted as a newbie, but my post count only recently passed the 100 mark. I don't think theres anything specific to being considered new, except that you've only been a member of the site for just over a month. If newness was measured by contribution, I'd consider you an experienced member but I think its more to do with what is contributed to discussions.

I dunno. I suppose being active helps. I'd say once you have about 100 or so, posts that actually contribute to topics and debates and such you've proven to be someone who wants to stick around.

Of course then again, some people just like to read other peoples thoughts, only posting when they really feel the need to.

Guess it just depends.
^^ This, I've been hanging around for three years now though only two are on record. New people stop being new the moment they contribute to the site and have more than 50 posts. The reason I don't have that many posts in two years time is I don't post on a lot of threads that I read because I don't have things to contribute as much so I keep quite and the thread free of a skip-able post.

When Scde2 takes you to the bed thread

When you are prompted to go to 4chan.

When you get trapped in a sunken Forum Game thread.

When you know to blame Kross...

Post count and join date do play a part in making you recognizable as a regular (as do certain badges like the regular and the Neo) but like any community it is the relationships you build here that make you stand out. Everything else, like knowing Escapist inside jokes or occasionally bringing up an old series that everyone forgot, is just glamour; it doesn't really matter. If you have friends you talk to/fight with then you are not a newbie in my eyes.

Now for me personally, I first realized I was a veteran of the site when I looked down my friends at some point last year. I was filled with memories looking at each name and felt bad whenever I spotted a close friend who is no longer with us.

I'll be sticking around until the Hamsters stop spinning, that's a promise!

Really? Huh, I thought you needed to post at least 13 times, one per month minimum in order to get it. I could be wrong, I don't claim to know how the system works :p

I don't even remember why Onyx Oblivion is on mine. Him and Yahtzee, is all I have.
