When does change become bad?

I'm positive that this has been done before, but I couldn't find it with a search.

Alright, I was playing Metroid Prime today, and it occurred to me that it's pretty far removed from the original. I mean, the only real similarities are the whole "open world, look for hidden items" concept and Ridley. Despite this huge change, many fans of the series welcomed Prime with open arms, despite how we all know fanboys can be when a favorite series is changed one iota (look at the fervor over Diablo 3 as an example).

So, my question is: What makes the changes for Metroid and other games like it acceptable, whereas people go crazy over others like Diablo 3?

Most people can't handle any change, for better or worse. They will whinge and ***** and carry on about anything, always claiming that the original is better, until someone they get their opinions from decides that change is good.

My opinion is to make the change anyway. They'll still pay money for the game, despite their 50 forum posts calling for a boycott of anything and everything tainted by the people who deigned to implement change. Meanwhile, the people like me, who look forward to changes, be they good or bad, can rub our hands with glee as we await our next serving of what really matters. The story.

It's really the advancement of the systems. Metroid couldn't stay 2-D forever. Look at how far any gaming series as old as Metroid changes. For example, Final Fantasy has gone through drastic changes since its original release in 1987. Like humans, games adapt to their new environments to survive and flourish.

So, in other words, if its an advancement of the concept (i.e, a change to 3d) than it's better than the stylistic changes of Diablo?

I think it may be down to fan bases. Metroid, as far as I know never really had a massively rabid fanbase, and whist some disapproved of the direction the prime series took, many saw it as honoring the roots of the series and improving upon the concept by taking it in a new direction.

Others well, who knows. Perhaps they are just very protective of the game. I know when the 'cel-da' shots were released I was a bit taken aback, but as soon as I saw the game in action I know it was a good move. However there were a lot more people who didn't like the direction (most who, predictably, refused to play it) and there was a lot of outcry over it.

I think its all to do with fanbases and how much they get to talk with one another. If the fanbase is based over the internet, then the naysayers will always sound louder than those who like it. They tend to be louder and incite others to jump on the bandwagon.

Well you are describing Fanboys from different creeds. I will show you how different they are with their steroetype:

The PC Fanboy thinks he is better than the console brethren. He obsessively shouts number stats about his.. 8800 Gefore card!... computer. He hates new colors in his games.

The Nintendo fanboy is 4-7 or over 30 and either cant cross the road or thinks that Ocarina of Time is the second coming of Jesus christ. But in the end doesnt care about it because they cant remember the glory days anymore or never played the original

The Playstation Fanboy is the underdog sadly and relys on hope that Final Fantasy 13 is godsend. whoops. He doesnt hate anything because we neeed games sony!

And the Xbox Fanboy thinks that the playstation Fanboy is a lesser being and that Fable 2 is gay and Call of duty 5 is awesome. (Which it isnt for god sakes!)He will hate anything that doesnt meet the gore requirements and doesnt have someone die every 5 seconds.

But the point is that Different Fanboys have different Ticks which will cause them to go into nerd rage. BTW i own all these systems except wii so i kinda know what im talking about and sorry if i offended.
