has anyone else encountered times when 'friendly' AI has not been useless, but has actually made things worse for the player? Where they've caused you to lose or die, because of what they have done, with no mistakes on your part?

In COD 2 and 3, I've had friendly soldiers run in front of me just as I've taken a scoped shot and run after a grenade I've thrown to invoke 'friendly fire will not be tolerates'. I've had them walk in front of me as I toss grenades, meaning they bounce back to land in my lap, and in 3 I often found myself trapped because a friendly character locked me in position - leading to death, or that smoke grenade I threw getting wasted.

And my Gears of War 2 insane run had several sequences where I'd setup a safe spot... which led to Dom running from it into a middle of a crossfire, and getting downed. And instead of crawling towards me, he'd crawl deeper into the firestorm, so that if I wanted to heal him before he bled out, I'd be killed by the volume of fire anyway. I had not been Hit. I had not done anything stupid. but I was losing repeatedly because of the stupid AI driving Dom.

In MW2's terrorist level I walked infront of the AI then they began shooting at me, they didn't bother changing their aim.

Not as abd as that, bt there's a glitch in Stalker that makes everyone yourenemy, even neutrals and allies. It sucks to have the entire friendly population of a town suddenly turn on you, especially when they pack AK's to a man.

Worse, if you save the game after said glitch takes place, it's permanent on your save.

I've died so many times in Gears of War 2 bleeding to death at the feet of my idiotic sidekicks, I'm serious it's a real problem but I have to be fair. It is just AI it can't be guarentied to work every single time. Also in ODST never even think for a second that you can afford to let an NPC drive the Warthog in Dutch's level... all that will happen is you'll get flipped over and blown up.

Also the worst is AI Dom in Gears one in the level against the Kryll, right after the gunfight in the graveyard just before you have to guide him to the door with the light. I had to retry that section so many times because he constantly leapt right into the darkness and got himself instantly killed thus send me back to the beginning. I'm serious towards the end after about seven times I was begging him to stand still long enough for me to reach the building and of course he wouldn't listen and leapt into the blackness and died anyway. Finally I worked out that I had to walk on the very far edge of the tunnel to prevent him from leapin to his death and my reload.... god that was stressful.

Most of the time, friendly AI just seem to be in the way, blocking my path, meaning they're a nuisance rather than being downright lethal. But one time, in Saints Row 2, I was out reclaiming a neighbourhood from the Ronin and I had a "friendly" AI with me...

While I was killing some lieutenants, the AI stood a few meters away, trying to shot the other Ronin member that were showing up. It was just that there was a car blocking all of the bullets. When I had finished my little genocide, and was on my way to the next group of lieutenants, I had to pass the car. At that point, it caught fire, and my freak of a companion kept firing, until the car exploded, setting both of us on fire and launching us several meters, ending with both of us burning up as we lay down.

Since then, I never EVER bring a friendly AI with me, if I can avoid it...

Awww damn, you must have a better version of 3. All my AI partners ever did was follow about 10 feet behind me.

I hate being pointman.

Packie MacCreary. Stupid bastard ran right in front of my gun and died, so I had to do the whole mission again for no good reason.

I remember in Half Life: Episode 1 that I had to solve this one puzzle when there was a piece of wood or something blocking a switch I needed to activate. The best it seemed TO ME to solve this was to climb down so that I'm behind the blockage then fire a ball of energy into the switch. This would have worked fine if it wasn't for Alyx's lack of climbing skills and her need to follow.

If I spent too much time down there she'd try to join in...by throwing her self off a ledge and into the void below, leading to a game over screen. This must have happened 8 times. I did finally manage to do it though.

Later when I replayed episode one I found there was a much easier way to do it, so ValvE probably hadn't thought of the situation I used and hadn't programed Alyx to...well...be a complete dumb arse.

They did that to me for the most part (including ignoring the Nazi standing right in front of them at least until after he had killed me). The exceptions were detailed in my original post.

Red Faction Guerilla.

Nuff' said.

They walk into your firing line, hang around areas filled with combat when you're running away, and are generally completely useless in a firefight. AND YOU LOSE TRUST WHEN THEY DIE.

Somebody didn't think that shit through.

In Deadrising, I was clearing the way for some survivors I was escorting, with my sniper rifle. There was basically one more zombie in the way. I lined up my shot, made sure to hit him in the head, and make it hit hard. Then one of the survivors walks RIGHT THE FUCK IN FRONT OF MY BULLET, AT THE EXACT FUCKING TIME I SHOOT. HIS HEAD EXPLODES, I LOST A SURVIVOR, I'M GOING FOR THE ACHIEVEMENT, SO I HAVE TO START ALL THE FUCK OVER AGAIN. Deadrising has some terrible AI.

This isn't exactly 'friendly' AI , but it never fails to disturb me in Legend Of Zelda:OoT when all the chickens attack you and kill you if you attack one.
I always found it funny. :p
