Yep his 90s comedy films are still some of the best movies ever. God so many of the scenes in both ace venturas to this day still make me lose my shit.

Personally, I didn't enjoy either of the Pet Detectives,or most of his 90's work as a whole. Cable Guy, The Truman Show, Man on the Moon, Eternal Sunshine, and Series of Unfortunate Events are all amazing however. In these movies he was giving a great performance both understated and audacious as the scenes called for it. His "classic" films have always seemed to boil down to "Jim Carrey can't tell a lie!" or "Jim Carrey is literally a cartoon!" or "Jim Carrey is Jim Carrey!" (Pet Detective).

It is his later work that really showcases his talent as both a comedian and an actor as a whole.

It's Matthew Broderick in The Cable Guy, not Ben Stiller.
And I love that movie, a dark look at pop-culture obsessed superfan weirdos is even more relevant today than it was in the 90s.
Yeah, I loved this movie. Still do. I even have the soundtrack around here somewhere.

And I really do think people mostly wanted Jim Carrey to come out and talk out his ass and be done with it.
This.

I think that Cable Guy not receiving the credit it deserves comes from Carrey being so typecast at the time. I think people went into it looking for Ace Ventura but what they got was a pretty dark comedy - which is my favorite type of comedy. This is still my favorite Carrey movie (though Man on the Moon is close behind) in terms of comedy and it's definitely my favorite Stiller effort.
