I finally got back into Far Cry 3, after some severe waffling. And I have to say, it's the first game I've played where I'm not at all aggravated by the quicktime events. Namely, because they're purely part of story missions, as opposed to a bullshit game mechanic like Just Cause 2, and unlike most other games that utilize them (except Just Cause 2), you're not playing through a strict series of events that guides you into it like a rollercoaster guides you through a tunnel. Far Cry being a bigass free roam game. Mainly, it's utilized to escape certain scenarios, but there was one point that I genuinely found it really interesting.

The knife fight with Buck. Let's face it, this is a shooter with what is essentially the industry's current mainstream standard for realism (however realistic it might actually be in this case is irrelevant) and that means that enemies drop with a few bullets or melee slashes. Except those damn heavies, those fucking-- *ahem*, anyway, so in this case, a quicktime grapple was a great way to make the fight tense, memorable and drawn out in a game that it would have just been majorly immersion breaking to have him be a total bullet sponge.

What examples do you have of game mechanics (potentially even largely vilified ones, maybe) being executed to their best potential?

And please spoiler any story spoilers, I feel the need to remind people. Particularly with recent releases, as I am poor, and my game purchases are few and far between.

I honestly never got the whole hate on QTE, almost all the time they were reasonable, a few other times they WERE cheap but they made you restart the scene in question and you lost maybe 10 seconds of your life, no big deal really, what is so wrong with this? plus they were hilarious as well.

The ONLY QTEs I DO kind of hate are the Tomb Raider QTEs. They are buggy as hell and, in one occasion in particular, this has got to be the ONLY game that I feel like it trolled me with QTE. Seriously its just evil... they dont even tell you what button to press, glitchy and just way too annoying to fit in.
