Basic supply and demand rules; they sell it at the whatever price people are willing to buy it.

Games will never be imposible for anyone to afford.
shhh... be quiet
they don't want you to know that.
Quick, we must...'silence' this 'Halo Fanboy' before they get hold of him!

Prices are already too high. The going rate for a game back then was around $30. The last game I remember buying for that much was SimCity 3000 Unlimited. Then someone released a game for $40 dollars, and then $50. The first PC game I saw selling for $50 was BioShock. I'm sure there were others before that, but then, it was the time where I was forced to THINK. How badly do I really want this game? $50 bucks is a lot of money, and big change from $30.
I'd never pay $50 for Left 4 Dead, though.

Considering I've only bought 2 games this year, I'd say I wouldn't I'm in much trouble game-spending wise.

Ebay is my friend. I can usually find any game for 20 bucks less than its current price.

That is, of course, if I ignore the "collectors editions"

Games are coming down in price...

Unless your Australian, because then the industry loves to screw you over the gauntless* fucks

*= me not actually knowing what the word means but it SOUNDS smart.
I used to see some new releases at $120 for a while, usually just $100 or occasionally $110 atm though.
And I haven't looked it up, but gauntless could refer to the old method of initiating a duel by throwing down the gauntlet (or slap across the face with it i think), but these guys just go straight for the jugular without warning, without following social laws or common decency to fellow man.

Oh, and $100 is too much for a game except on rare occasions like fallout 3 collectors edition...because a part of me is quite nostalgic for the first 2 games.
At the current exchange rate I think that's $65 US Dollars or £45 Pounds

oh the joys of haggling, and store hopping. Only time I pay near 5o bucks for a game is if I pick it up at launch and it's a game I really want. Aside from that it's on average 35-45 dollars for me per game, sometimes lower.

90$ for console games and 50$ for hand held games. I don't earn enough money to keep playing different games especially when I can beat most of them in under a week these days!

I rarely buy game nowadays because of the rediculously high prices. 30 dollars is stretching it and I bought Lost Planet for 25 dollars and felt slightly ripped-off. I bought the Director's Cut of Scratches for 20 dollars and I thought that was very decently priced, and that's a game I would give about 8/10. For me to pay 50 dollars it would have to be a game I know I will be playing for a long time and that I will enjoy thoroughly enough that I'd give it a 9/10 or more.

i prefer cheaper, so i can have some pocket change but i am not that fussed about price, i also have OCD for collectors anyway.

and Australia, value JB hi fi! its the cheapest source, considering buying Far Cry 2 collectors at EB v JB can save you $30, only now are other retailers finally realise the power of undercutting.

Games are and have always been too much.

Except for the Orange Box.
I will never pay above $50.00 USD, because I have a PC and a Wii, and I never buy special editions.

Actually, I'm going to buy BioShock off of Steam for $19.00 or $29.00. Not sure how much it is. Anyways, good deal!

Consoles like the Neo Geo and 3DO in the 1990s costs the equivalent of $1000.USD today and the games were $100 each. Thats already happened, you missed it, they failed, and now everything is cheap, and given the economy, its likely to stay that way for quite some time. Next topic...

Some publisher will soon try to game the system by selling a pretty good game for $30 USD and watch as it gets better reviews and sells better because it makes buying used less worth while. After that others will follow suit. Portal would have been trashed by reviewers and ignored by gamers if it had sold as a full price, stand alone game.

You want to know the real reason New Zealanders are moving to Australia?

Weren't games more expensive in the days of the Genesis/SNES? I forget.
Yes, yes they were. I'm guessing most of you are teenagers. When the original Legend of Zelda came out (nes) it was $70 and the nes was $160. Mario 3 was $60. Taking into account inflation and what-not I'd say we're getting a pretty good deal on $60 games.

The only time I will consider stopping getting games will be when it comes down to either food or games.

Even then, it depends on how hungry I am.

They've passed that point for me, around the PS2 generation. I remember big name PC games costing £30, then I think it was PS1 which pushed it up to £40 and each generation has knocked a tenner on until you've got the ridiculous state of affairs where I saw Fable 2 on sale, second hand, for £40!

Best bet is as above, play an outdated system. A year or two ago I got an Xbox for £50 with Halo 2, Fable, Forza and PGR. Games cost about £10 second hand as well. But in the end I upgraded because it was really starting to get hard to get decent games, with the second hand stores dropping Xbox shelf space to a couple of feet. That combined with GTA IV and Sainsbury's selling 360 Premiums for £140 clinched it.

I remember new Xbox games being £40 and now Xbox 360 games are £40 so there's not a lot of change there and I don't think it's going to go much higher because people aren't willing to pay more than that. I guess if we're going to see a lot more periphal games like Rock Band then we're going to have to fork out hundreds of pounds for a single game.
