I find it ironic and perhaps even criminal on some level that people still cannot readily find let alone buy gpu's without resorting to Ebay or buying a whole new machine even though a spec exists that makes gpu upgrading possible! I use my laptop for gaming and I don't feel like buying a new one every time a new gpu series comes out. What do you all think?

I think you should buy a desktop or even a shuttle if you want to play games. Laptops are just unsuitable and no amount of tweaking is going to change that. :p

It will probably be very hard to swap GPUs in laptops, as they are different sizes, and the heatsinks need to connect directly to the core itself, which could be in a number of different positions on the card. The most powerful mobile GPU, the 8800M GTX has the same spec as a basic 8800GTS (90nm) desktop card, so it would be possible to play new games on an extremely high spec laptop; This would probably be twice the price of a desktop with the same spec, and would most likely overheat.

yeah its a funny one. The obvious reason that watt guzzling gpus need a mains power supply doesnt really hold as lots of people use stationary laptops for space saving and looks.

I remember there was a big fanfare about this - http://www.mxm-upgrade.com/ It looks a bit scrapheap challenge, however you may be the type that likes getting hands on.

Whether you get it to work or not, I think you'd be hard pushed to get an '8800 gtx go' module and crap all over the latest games. I share your frustration but I think P1ne is right. Slow hard drives dont help either!

For the price of a top spec gaming laptop you'd be able to build a desktop that could take over the world, working into defence networks and raining nuclear fire on all life after deciding that organics were a dispensable nuicance!

Ok stick with the laptop.

(Edit. repeating above post, sorry i took my sweet time as i'm at work!)
