They'll just go play other games. It's going to be around for a long time though, I'd say at least a decade more. Ultima Online and Everquest 1 are still alive, hell even Meridian 59 has players, and none of them had anywhere near the numbers WoW has.

ive played for 4 years and ive enjoyed. even tho im getting a little bored with it now. the raids are too easy, theres too many noobs who buy other peoples accounts, leaving the buyers with no skill of the class whatsoever.

to me, WoW is getting dull. ill still play when my friend Magnus needs some help with quests, dungeons, etc. but WoW IS getting old. ill probably start playing again if another expansion or a new hero class (like the death knight, where u have to unlock it) comes out.

I can't see the genre being eliminated any time soon.
Also, WoW isn't closing any time soon.
That's the point of a hypothetical question. You're asking about something that hasn't happened and most likely won't ever happen.

Blizzard has already announced, and has taken to the drawing board, a new MMO. Since Starcraft 2 and Diablo 3 have moved into further stages of production, I think it's a good idea. This MMO will probably be their replacement of WoW.

By the time WoW ends, there will certainly already be less than 1 million subscribers left. Nothing out of the ordinary would happen.

Alright... I answered what would happen.

People would move on.
What else would there be to do?
Riot in the streets?

I bet other MMos wil be overjoyed, the not so popular ones.
and people will save like $15 every month = $180 every year

Oh and I think a few people from those 11 mil might make up a game called World of WarHammerRoadOnlineCraftScape that will attract the 11 mil market of gamers :p and make a ton of money!

You obviously don't see the humor in what he said... but he is correct... WoW doesn't ?end?, it will live on long after man has gone extinct... NPC's will continue their paths while the millions of avatars sit idle in the position they were last at prior the solar flare which spared the Blizzard servers... only I will be left; alone to conquer Azeroth in my den drilled 500 miles into the upper mantle? even after I?m dead WoW will live on for other civilizations to learn?play?laugh?and most of all? war?
Err..... What of Blizzard servers get nuked? Al their data is lost! And what if all Srevers of WoW which contain The game codes and character Codes explodes? It wont live dude... and they'll lose millions on refunds!

the servers will stay open until there is statistically few enough people that care that it becomes a financially bad idea to keep them open. When that's the case, noone will care that their characters are gone, because they will have not logged in for months and months.

WoW will get dethroned long before the actual servers shut down.

IIRC there are still Everquest servers, and if they're down, they haven't been down more then a couple of years.. and that game is old as heck, and nowhere near as successful as WoW (even being the second most successful MMO)

I've been thinking... What will happen when the world of warcraft severs are finally closed. I mean at the minute there is about 10 million subscribers i think? And there is a growing majority of them who are raiding set times every other day i think it is. When this virtual time consumer finishes there will be a mass of people with probably wasted talent that will have new oppurtinities. Now, you might think im joking and in a way it sounds silly but in some cases it's true. Imagine if there were no more MMO rpgs What would this vast majority of the gaming community do instead?

What would you do if wow closed tomorrow?

And there was no eve

Im guessing no one plays runescape anymore anyway.

Sorry if there has been a thread similar to this btw
I'm trying to imagine the scenarios under which there would be no more MMO's. Based on my conclusions, I think that what I would do would be one of:

- Take a break from contemplating the blindness and folly of secularism to go to the mosque, as rightfully prescribed by the most blessed Caliph, true servant of Allah.
- Scavenge for dinner in the crumbling, radiation-soaked ruins of what used to be the local shopping centre, pausing occasionally to stare wistfully into the middle distance and conjure up bittersweet memories of another time...a better time...a time before...
- My usual routine; an invigorating early-morning writhe, followed by a hard day of vomiting up my own dissolving internal organs while listening to the radio repeat a recorded message that "A CURE IS CLOSE", a good hearty dinner of effluent from the suppurating lesions covering my degraded flesh, finished off with an evening of screaming at the ceiling to please just let me die.

This

However, if all the MMOs close tomorrow, the most likely result is someone makes a new one, and gets insanely rich from all the poor lost souls desperate to return to the blissful half-life of the internet

Edit: is it just me, or does that sound really bitter and cynical?

though I don't see this ever happening, if it did then about 10 million new talent will be introduced to the world. diseases will be cured, green technology will finally be used more frequently, potions of immortality will be created and the global unification would occur. humanity would now be known only as humanity, not as black or white, Chinese or Russian, British or American. the only country on the planet would be earth, and we would enter a new golden age.

either that, or 10 million people would find different games and waste their lives on that instead.

Blizzard would do a 'Coke.'

1. Shut down the servers and promise a new improved WoW.
2. 'New Wow' wouldn't be as good and players everywhere would complain.
3. Blizzard then brings back 'Classic WoW' making trillions.

WoW never EVER dies.

If all the MMO's vanish tomorrow, the people who play them will probably just start watching TV again.
