Where are 2019's hits

Looking back in December of last year, I was pretty excited for what I saw coming in 2019. A cool looking post apoc Far Cry game, Rage 2, Resident Evil 2 Remake, Kingdom Hearts 3, Anthem, Sekiro, DMC5, Days gone, and more. But here we are in July and frankly I'm a bit disappointed.

Of course we all have game preferences that we like and different games we were looking forward to. But of the games above that I've personally looked forward to, Sekiro and RE2 are the only ones that weren't disasterously disappointing. Though DMC5 is mechanically good, the story just lost me but it's still a 7/10 game and at this rate it might be good enough to get into my top 5 the wasy this year is going.

I wanna know how you guys feel about the year so far. What are you stand out hits and stand out flops. What are you looking forward to that is still to come this year?

Up coming games that I still have hope for include, Astral Chain, Code Vein, and maybe Pokemon though that one sounds ruined before it could even have its dex revealed.

RE2 is ok/average game but too overrated. I prefer RE7.

imo Metro Exodus is best game of 2019 so far. the one and only masterpiece this year will see will be Doom Eternal and it is yet to be released.

I have to say 2019 is better than 2018 easily.

Sekiro is amazing. I'm replaying it at the moment, on hard ( bell rung) and without any prosthetics. Super well made game.

As far as this year goes, it feels pretty par the course honestly. There are only really 2-4 great games a year. Which varies depending on your taste of games of course.

Sorry. I have such a long list of games to play that I have barely paid attention to this year's releases (heck! There is a Turok port for Nintendo Switch and I took notice only recently!).

I suppose not every year can be 2017.

Horizon Zero Dawn
Persona 5
Zelda Breath of the Wild
Mario Odessey
Resident Evil 7
Nier automata
Cuphead
Nioh
Divinity 2
Pyre
DragonQuest 11
Yakuza 0
Hollow Knight

2017 was fucking ridiculous.

MK11 and Sekiro for me, although I?m curious about RE2 REmake.

Also speaking of MK, who would?ve thought the series would now be more popular than ever and have a rebooted film [https://geektyrant.com/news/the-raid-actor-joe-taslim-is-set-to-play-sub-zero-in-new-mortal-kombat-movie] in the works. R rating is also music to my ears.

FFXIV put out one of the best MMO expansions I've ever seen just earlier this month and it has received overwhelmingly positive reviews from critics and fans: https://www.metacritic.com/game/pc/final-fantasy-xiv-shadowbringers.

I know MMOs are kind of their own thing, but I would still consider it a big hit of 2019.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
Well, Ion Fury comes out august 15th
Freedom Planet 2 is supposed to come out 2019
There is Doom Eternal that looks pretty great
Rage 2 ended up being a quite solid game, not a masterpiece but quite enjoyable
Risk of Rain 2 might be early access but it made a big splash
Golden Treasure: The Great Green released less then a month ago and is one of the best visual novels sort of (not sure if it really counts as a VN, its mostly text but it has a normal combat system and is based around how you play it more then most VNs seem to be) that I've seen
It also looks like Hollow Knight Silksong will be out at some point this month

It's been kinda tepid. It was pretty awesome having that many big titles coming out at the start of the year, even if some (Kingdom Hearts 3) were complete duds.

RE2 Remake I had the most fun with this year. I'm not one for speedrunning at all, but RE2 made me want to just like the classic games used to. Mechanically it's terrific. Unfortunately it drops the ball with its characters and narrative. Not that they were ever outstanding in the original, but things just flowed better and the characters were more endearing, whether intentional or not. And if Wolfenstein: The New Order can have something silly as cyborg Nazi's on the Moon and still craft a compelling story with sincere characters, than so can Resident Evil.

I had a lot of fun with DMC5, and actually found it the most enjoyable entry in the franchise, but I still can't get into this world too much and I never bothered to finish it. The character design is phenomenal though, and the way they managed to make the scanned in faces feel like they're part of the design (unlike RE2 Remake) was fantastic.

Sekiro just wasn't for me, and Days Gone was a bit of a dried up turd.

Par for the course really. There was a 3-year span (end of last-gen - beginning of this gen) where I didn't play a game that was 8/10 or better.

Gloomhaven [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OFw_CBYWN4A] comes out in a few days at least.

Most of the big releases that were slated for this year have been pushed to next year, so 2019 is looking kind of barren. Next year is going to be pretty huge though - Cyberpunk, The Last of Us 2, Halo Infinite, Ghost of Tsushima, FFVII Remake, Vampire Bloodlines 2 are just some of the highlights.

To me Sekiro is an absolute hit and one of my favorite games in a very long time. Absolutely adore it to death. DMC5 was also great too, same goes for the remakes of trails of cold steel 1-2 though I get why you'd not count them since they're remasters and not new games. Though there's the third game in the series coming out in November and that's definitely gonna count, looking forward to it so much.

Well there is Resident Evil 2 remake and...Is it just me or does this generation feel like its winding down in preparation for the next generation next year.

Having said that, most of the games I want to play this year are on the Switch, stuff like Fire Emblem, Luigi's Mansion 3 and Links Awakening remake all look good.

I think what's happening is that all the games get released during specific pockets of months and nothing comes during the rest of the year which makes it feel like there's way too many games coming out one day and nothing coming out the next.

It's been a pretty good year so far. Loved Sekiro and Kingdom Hearts 3, enjoyed DMC 5 and REmake 2 quite a bit. Still very much looking forward to Death Stranding, Ion Fury and Outer World's

All things considered, there's no reason to complain.

It was a pretty packed 3 months at the beginning of the year so I'm still playing catch up.

Also, Metal Wolf Chaos re-release is next month.

Not just that, there's also just less games per year in general. Or at least, less AAA games.

I've had a quick look at how many games each of the big name publishers release each year and there seems to be a pretty clear downward trend in the last decade. Not counting rereleases/remasters, we appear to be down to about 4-5 games each on average. Activision has it worst among the Western publishers with only Sekiro, Crash Team Racing and the upcoming CoD in 2019, and nothing else. Tho that's better than Konami, who have jack shit aside from some rerelease retro collections.

I didn't look into the platform holders (i.e. Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft) though. From the looks of it, Nintendo is the most prolific there.

Oh yeah, I play only a few AAA games a year at most so that's not really what I'd judge on.

Neither would I, but most of time when people talk about hits, they mean the major AAA titles. Looking at the OP, seems to be the case here.
