Where Did It All Go Wrong?

There are games destined to go down in the history books (not much of a task to catalogue the 30-40 years so far, but nevermind).

What they are written down for can differ a great deal however. For instance: Big Rigs: Over the Road Racing is in there for reasons ever so slightly different to the those of Half-Life 1 & 2.

There are also games that will never be properly remembered because they are neither too sour (shit) nor too sweet (ZOMG AMAZING). These games may have potential, but they will inevitably fall short for an infinite amount of reasons.

So I ask you, what games had that potential and where was it lost during the game?

My votes go for The Force Unleashed and Assault On Dark Athena.

The Force Unleashed:

The game begins with a bang, with you as Vader off to kill a Jedi in the continuing purge. You hurl Wookiees all over the place (as well as stormtroopers) and basically wank your force metre for all it's worth.

The next level begins with you now as the Apprentice, your force powers are pretty limited but you can still cut your way through a couple of dozen stormtroopers with relative ease.

My problem was not with the reduction of power, as it indicated what you could (in the end should) of become. But you did not.

After the TIE Fighter factory enemies become invulnerable to at least 2 attacks of yours, and you're constantly pitted against 5 different types of enemies who are collectively invulnerable to every attack in you skill-set.

Assault On Dark Athena:

Simple this one; whilst not an amazing game, it was definitely solid and good fun. The problem is, it should have ended about 3-4 hours before it did (that's how much it felt like anyway).

Your main objective for the game (or so you assume)? Escape the ship.

What do you do once you have escaped the ship? Attempt to get back on the ship.

Why? No one bloody knows.

Note: I appreciate this may have been done before, but the key is at what point in the game things went wrong - not just what games couldn't deliver on the hype.
