I ask because we reched the point the we (the community and the developers) realize that realistic isn't interchangable with good gameplay/settings. see gta4's gritbox, The plot of any tom clancy game invovling nukes etc. So where do YOU think the industry goes from here cheaper, digital download games,A more light-hearted less story based era?

I don't think we're quite done with graphics just yet. It'll continue for another few years, then...who knows. It'll probably start being generic games but we'll look for new ways to interface with them. It'll never really end there will always be things we want to improve in games.

Maybe we'll just start seeing bigger games, rather than short confined shooters or sandbox games taking place in a scaled down city. I don't think games will change much, there will just be more tacked onto them.

Says you. I find realism perfectly compatible with good gameplay and settings - as long as it's simulation-style realism.
I think you've misunderstood what Interchangeable means. It doesn't mean incompatible. It means that 'Thing A' can be replaced with 'Thing B' and no-one will notice any difference. So what he has said is that good/realistic graphics are not a replacement for a good setting/story. Or to put it simply, that having good/realistic graphics doesn't mean you can just forgo everything else.

When it comes to things like this I don't think that it is sensible to talk about the games industry as if it was one thing. Different studios will to things differently apart from the ones that will be the same.

That said, I'd like to see more wacky, off-the-wall stuff - if only so that everybody else gets off my back about actually liking realistic games.
I agree with your first point. What I meant I'm tried of the gritty to the point of depression graphics and stories of recent games. I'd take a hit in the graphics department if xbox live ran more smoothly for example.

Graphics/Realism will be the focal point of games for some time to come. The next genre to be plagued to death will either be western RPGs, or it's a type of game which has not yet been created

Realism's a passing fad - like furbies. Sadly, we're now getting into the Tomogachi gaming phase that is insipid gmiicky motion-capture devices, such as kinect and whatever the demonic PS equivalent is called. Now we'll move on the the next millenia and realize everything we were ever told as children about being nice and just were nothing but LIES and... I forgot where I was going with that.

Hopefully, game developers will realize we've had our fill of "drama" (read "emo") and "realism" (read impossible-to-tell-what-the-FUCK-is-going on).

What no small amount of us what is just the relentless juevenile cartharsis of slaughtering hundreds of dudes for no fucking reason other than it pleased us.

Fun fact: Criminals convicted of violent offenses almost never daydream. Think about it - do you daydream or play games about your job? Games were meant to offer an alternative, but they lost their way...

It's all going to hell!

Seriously though, Sandbox, and how your choices will affect you and the world around you, I think, is gaining momentum. Casual gaming will gain a lot more ground in these coming years as well.

Hope they go back to make entertainment the core of the game.
This, a million times this.

I don't want to play a game and think, the code probably goes like this, or this game reminds me of X, Y, or Z.

Games don't need to be complex to be good, games simply need to be fun. And I am sick of the "Everything must use a brown pallette". How god damn hard is it, to invent a colorful world. Games are supposed to be escapism, why would I want realism. Go create a god damn fantasy world that's beautiful and imaginitive. I mean it's not like there isn't any creativity left for games, even if you work to create a game with an old movie or story as a base. I mean movies like "The Neverending Story" or "The Pagemaster" were amazing and could be an amazing base for a game.

The problem is so many games will stagnate and try to replicate the story. When I said base, I mean go ask for permission to use it, and then create a new story using the world and creatures in it.

Games don't need to be complex either. The demonic entity known as Zynga has people hooked with clones, and simple games like VVVVVV, Chime or even Audiosurf are fun as all hell, and are creative.

Also as for the brown palette, I think Avencast Rise of the Mage nailed it on what I expect with a brown palette. It's limited to the areas you'd expect to be I dunno brownish, but also added in other colors with it. The gaming industry needs to stop being afraid of mixing colors.
