People seldom realize just HOW technologically advanced this generation of video games are. Everyday, technological leaps in 3-D Design, Simulation, and AI are made through video game production. Code has become more efficient than ever, and PC modding is spawning games of it's own. With so much advancement going on, I just want to know, where the f*ck can we go from here?

The same thing was said when color TV came out I believe. Anyway, I'd like to see gaming go back to what it was supposed to be about; gameplay. I'm glad this stupid beauty pageant of graphics is coming to a slump to be honest. Now developers will have to make a game with some actual depth for it to be good. Back to pursuing the next chess, I say ;)

Virtual reality.
That seems the most obvious step, but not necessarily the one video game companies will take. I've read a little bit about this on the internet, and it seems that most big name companies would rather take the safe route these days, rather than risking a fortune on making a new generation of VR games. It could make or break the entire industry, which is why it's such a big risk. Also, VR games will most likely be less accessible than the console games we know and love. There's just too many issues with VR right now for it to be a decent option......but that's just my opinion.

Good post, lets keep em coming!

Do you have any idea what's coming?

1000 core CPUS, just everything. I believe there was an article in Custom PC, look it up.

Watch the last video on the page. Seems to me this idea has some legs. Ever other 3-D simulation I've seen gives me a headache.

Virtual Reality seems highly likely, but it's not the only one. There's been experimentation with stimulating the senses of smell and taste in games, something which has yet to really work out comfortably and effectively. There have also been experiments with controlling games using brain impulses, but those also have yet to work well enough to be a viable control system.

The current trend seems to be towards more and more graphical bling, and bigger environments. Perhaps this will stall in the near future and we'll see an improvement in things like gameplay and writing.
But, like everyone who read cyberpunk stories, I want my neural interface.

omg..

the first time they turn that into a game

I will buy a Wii

I will be at the store that afternoon, because that is amazing.

and if Wii actually does implement that, they will win the generation war as some people have suggested

The Wii really took a step forward with creating a more active, evolved, game experience. But their trending towards the more casual gamer market, I think has halted the possible advances that such gaming could bring to a more core audience.

We'll probably see more of a change in how games work as opposed to how they are played - we've seen a lot of that with the recent trend of open world, free choice games. I'd expect than allowing players to shape their own experiences is going to be what drives games in the future.

the Wii is selling by the bucket load.

Right now they're appealing to the lowest denominator.

There's no rule that says that they have to stay like that, and Every one of those new gamers who bought a Wii for WiiCooking or whatever the heck they bought, they're going to want more.

and when the want more, Nintendo will be there to give it to them.
