1. Norway
2. Sweden
3. Germany
4. Austria
5. Hungary
6. Italy
7. The U.K.
8. Canada
9. Romania
10. USA

List compiled of all the music that I find pleasing to listen too, too many genres to pin-point but... yeah, almost everything. Except modern-day popular music (modern radio-pop/r'n'b)... Good Lord, I loathe it..
Romania making a top ten intrigued me. Which bands do you like from these here parts? :)

All my favourite artists are american so...America I guess. Whilst america manages to churn out awful music at the same time. Yeah but Atmosphere, Aesop Rock, Blue Scholar, Sage Francis and Listener are all american, sadly so is the crime against nature that is ICP.

Well, my first introduction to Romanian music was via the works of George Enescu and Dimitrie Cuclin (composers of classical music). The next thing I discovered was Ducu Bertzi who is a folk-musician.
And two years ago I went to the country to perform with the ensemble I was currently a part of, we were treated to some of the most amazing folk-music I have ever witnessed, so vibrant, so full of life and energy and emotion.. I loved it, and I soooo wish I could make music like that.
I don't know if it's available anywhere on the net but if it is I would recommend: Mahala Rai Banda, which is a traditional gypsy folk-band, and Shukar Collective which fuses traditional gypsy-music with electronica.

We here in the UK have some good bands like coldplay and mumford and sons, you know bands who write with passion and meaning but small countries have amazing bands who write beautiful music in their native language
if you want an example search in Sigur Ros "Hoppipila" on youtube, heck listen to all their songs amazing stuff

I rather than answer the question in terms of a geographical perspective, we should think of it in a socio-economical perspective. So, rather than asking myself "what country does the music I enjoy come from?" I ask "what social background do my favorite musicians come from?".

For the most part, I enjoy stuff from Western Europe (Django Reindhart from France, for one...) but as of late I've been picking up on stuff that's influenced by musical traditions hailing from the Eastern Europe (the klezmorim [they're a U.S. group which focused on eastern european klezmer], Taraf de Haidouks). A lot of these musicians usually come from a long line of Romanian and Jewish immigrants.

I might even go so far as to say that generally speaking, it is individuals with a direct influence in their communal culture and a first hand experience of foreign cultures that ultimately provide the most meaningful art.

Well the United States of America has Taking Back Sunday and the Black Angels. Britland has David Bowie. I don't know it depends completely on your own taste in music. As for now I'll just listen and not worry where the best comes from.

I don't really notice any particular area I prefer for my music.
I love France, for Daft Punk
Canada for The Creepshow
And Japan, just because their music is so random.

But every country has their good music.

Braintree,UK. And American didn't make the best (90s) music. But I guess this is merely my opinion and not actually supported by any real facts. Oh well...

I find most of the stuff I listen to is European - German, Polish, Irish etc. Although that's mostly due to my affinity with Eurotrance. Ah how you bring back so many memories :)

Canada is responsible for some fantastic bands in recent years: Cancer Bats, Alexisonfire, Billy Talent, Comeback Kid and more
The UK had The Clash which will always be in our favour. We also currently have revolutionary bands like Gallows, Biffy Clyro, Architects and Enter Shikari. I think the UK is quite good at having bands which stand out and do something fresh. We also had The Beatles and The Cure
America creates consistently good rock, punk and metal bands like Killswitch Engage and Every Time I Die

I think, like everything in music, it's all a matter of opinion and a broad range of musical interests is important (despite the fact that I mainly mentioned hardcore bands in my examples)

:) I'm really glad you liked the music around here. Personally I'm not a big fan of gypsy music, it's a bit too lively for my taste, geared towards dancing, which is reeeeally not my cup of tea (I've actually broken limbs trying :)) ). But I understand the appeal and recognize the immense talent and spirit that goes into making it.

If I may be so bold, I recommend Grigore Lese, a singer of traditional Romanian music from an area in Romania called Tara Lapusului. It's unbelievably haunting and personal. Check this out.

And since you like folk music, I have a couple of other gems for you :)

(Huge snippets to be kind to everyone trying to navigate the thread)

My mind = Blown!
I mean, MY. GOD!
I will be up all night, though I had heard of Grigore Lese, I... I never knew what I had missed.
Any possibility that records can be bought online? Perhaps there is some international site distributing Romanian music that you know of?
Google, don't fail me now!

There we go: http://www.passiondiscs.co.uk/ !
Time to youtube and decide how much money to spend.

Heh, I remember in the old days, before the advent of broadband, I used to send and receive CDs and mixtapes :)) I even got some from Germany once. :) I suppose it could be considered piracy, but... seriously? Snail-mail piracy? :))
