Heh, I remember in the old days, before the advent of broadband, I used to send and receive CDs and mixtapes ) I even got some from Germany once. I suppose it could be considered piracy, but... seriously? Snail-mail piracy? )

I actually used to do the same thing, and I wouldn't consider that piracy, it's sharing.
I also seem to recall that it's not considered piracy at all, but that might as well be my imagination.
But yes, it doesn't seem like something that the law would bother to "crack down" on. After all, one does not break another mans record!

I think this pretty much nails it. Until aliens invade and make us rave to their probably awesome dubstep-techno dance music.

No... everyone knows aliens love country music. That's why they keep leaving their markings in farmer's fields in the South.

Really? I always thought that they left them as an act of revenge since they don't like country music. I can't see destroying peoples crops as an act of appreciation. but hey, they're aliens, what do I know?

Me too! Well, aside from one of my friend's 60 year old dad, but I've never met anyone my age who liked them. Well this is nice, I'm glad there are others out there.

It's an ongoing battle between the UK and America...see America steals other country's music and makes it their own, then other Americans get pissed about it and try to revamp it as their own, then Britain takes it and makes it good, then America jumps on the band wagon and tries to make it bigger and better. I believe this has happened with blues, jazz to rock, then punk, then trance, the only thing the UK hasn't jumped on is the emo/screamo/pop punk stuff...at least I haven't heard any kinda crappy artist like that from UK.

Most other popular music in other countries is inspired by western pop/rock...however, this does not at all apply to traditional music considering the east (any country/area) has their own defining style. As far as that goes, I'm goin with eastern europe/balkans has the best traditional music.

Are you joking? America started rock 'n roll and if there are any "thieves" it would most definately be the UK. Just look at Led Zeppelin on of the biggest rock bands to ever come out of UK stole a good number of lyrics and music from America blues guitarists. Theres a big difference between incorporating ideas from other countries music and straight up stealing it.

Dude don't get me wrong, there's no way anyone can argue that. I'm usually the one in a convo to make that point, most adaptations of rock I think started in America, I'm from Boston and hardcore was born here. But the pattern seems to be American music *inspired*(melodies/rhythmic patterns) by foreign music, then the UK does their polished take on it, then America tries to make it better again...while everyone else copies the beatles...

For me its Northern Ireland.

I love the bands and the pure goal of solidarity all the bands strive for. Its a real community. I think what makes me really love this is apart from the music it's just incredible to see passion like that, here in new York there's nothing of the sort. Sometimes bands help each other out but they'll never go on a limb for one another.

Norn Iron bands I'd recommend are:

General Fiasco (indie/alternative/pop band)

And So I Watch You From Afar (four-piece instrumental post hardcore/metal band)

A Plastic Rose (a band that shows me that inspiration from Nirvana isn't a bad thing)

Ash (my favorite band for about 6 years now with an incredible body of work)

Adebisi Shank (if you like the music played at the end of Extra Credits than seriously, check this out).

Panama Kings (broken up now but one of my favorite bands, you can hear/download all their tunes here http://panamakings.bandcamp.com/)

Fighting With Wire (A really great alternative/metal band trio with a great vocalist)

Two Door Cinema Club (an electro/pop trio that's taken the UK by storm, really proud of what they've accomplished so far).

I honestly don't know, because I don't check, because I don't care. And where is "the place" that "the music" comes from? Is it the label that sets the origin of the music? Is it the nationality of the musicians? Is it the place the musicians live, although they're not from there?
An example is VNV Nation: First they originated in Wexford, Ireland. Then London, United Kingdom. Now they're in Hamburg, Germany. So what would you call that? Irish? British? German?

But if you really want some sort of absolut statement from me, I would go with the following hitlist (which can and does change depending on mood and time and a lot of other factors) with some names that might ring some bells...or not:

1. Germany (Unending list of great musicians, from Rammstein to Beethoven to Equilibrium to Blind Guardian to Hans Zimmer)
2. Sweden (Machinea Supremacy, In Flames, PAIN, Sabaton, Hammerfall, Steel Attack for the win! *and others*)
3. Finnland (Hard Rock Halleluja! Also: Children of Bodom, Nightwish, Apokalyptica, Amaranthe and lots of lots more)
3. Russia (Russian Federation that is for political correctness. Includes: Origa [for melancholy moments], Flesh Field [for dark-epic moments], t.A.T.u.[for the naughty moments])
5. Moldova ("So Lucky *brwerwrwwrw*" ['Zdob şi Zdub' for the ones that don't watch the ESC 2011])
6. UK ("On a cold winter morning, in the time before the light", Dragonforce that is. Also: Alestorm and others)
7. US (Of course, a huge amount of artists: From oldschool (Alice Cooper and Megadeath) to newschool (Devil Driver and Disturbed) and "what were they thinking?" (Powerglove and DVDA))

Amuurica! I live here so I'm biased and more exposed to American music. Not saying the rest of the world has bad music because I do have my fair share of foreign music.
