The Escapist has been my Home page for nearly a year now, it should click over in June. I clearly like the Escapist and still think it's one of the best places on the Internet but I have no intention for voting for it in the webby awards. I've been thinking about this for a while now, ever since I started to see the links to the contest page. I must say that I didn't vote for it last year either however that was due mostly to not wanting to create an account on another website as I despise having numerous accounts on things, I much rather leave and then forget about my account before rather than joining and then forgetting my account. I have some accounts on other forums such Australian Gamer and Game Damage but those get little attention.
This year though, I felt bothered to make an account. I figured that the Escapist deserve to win for the entertainment that have supplied me for the past year. They brought in Moviebob and Unforgotten Realms, my two favourite things on the Internet to one single location, how can I not love them? I was actually going to go and vote tonight after seeing a rather annoying advert before a video when I got a private message asking me and presenting me with a bribe to go vote for them. The bribe was in the unoriginal form of a badge that it seems everyone gets. Part of the PM read as thus: "you will get a Special Badge for your profile when we win the award. Voting ends April 30th, so tell your family, tell your friends and help The Escapist win this award!"
Bribing their community with badges is not the way for the Escapist to go about this. I have no problem with the annoying, unskippable and just plain boring adverts at the start of every video and I have no problem with links to the awards all over the place but I do have a problem with the bribes. The Escapist should stand to win or lose based on it's own merits, a community turning up in huge numbers to win an award at the promise of a small trophy (that everyone gets) is not representative of the quality, it is representative of how large the community is and how eager they are to 'earn' badge. I think voters should go and vote because they like the Escapist enough to go and vote, like what I was doing, not at the promise of a fucking badge.
Because the Escapist thinks of me as a badge whore, as someone contempt to do whatever they want so that in return I may be given a little trophy, I am not voting for them this year despite the great content. Hopefully they don't try this next year either although I doubt it.

I would say the escapist is the place I go to because I would rather bath in water as opposed to sewerage. I frequent some sites a lot more then the escapist for reasons I won't go into, I also will not mention the other sites, but this would be my home.
The community is great, the content is great and... and... well I just like the place.

The site's registration process is giving me the pickle, so I give up.

The Escapist, Gamefaqs, Youtube, and MLB.com are my internet "homes". Although the last one is a place where I pop in to check standings, team news, and scores which take about 5 or less minutes. Newgrounds and Break get honorable mentions
The only other forums I waste time on other than The Escapist are the WOTC Star Warts forums and The Cartographers Guild. All Pen and Paper Roleplaying stuff.
