We've had moments in gaming where, on the brink of defeat, the bad guy suddenly falls down, the curtain of darkness lifts, and the victory theme plays triumphant. What was your closest victory in a game?

One of my most tense was playing Streets of Rage 2. I was fighting the third level boss, and it looked like the next punch was going to finish one of us off. Naturally I didn't want to lose a life in a game where every life counts dearly, so I steeled myself, measured the distance required to set my opponent up for doom, and prepared to deal the knockout blow. Unfortunately, I misjudged and the boss managed to hit me. Somehow my character clung on to life after what I thought would be a finishing blow, but now Zaalbar (I think that was the name of the boss) was flipping around me and I felt sure that something was going to have to give... and sure enough he made for a position to throw me. By some frantic maneuvering, I managed to turn the same direction the boss was facing, move down, and throw him instead, killing him. My health was inches away from zero.

To my chagrin, I still went on to lose the game on the last part of the last level, also making this among my closest losses.

A less spectacular example was when Yuna of FFX knocked out a flan after an ambush had brought the rest of my party to the edge of death. (I'd over-trained my characters and was withdrawing.) Needless to say, she was stunned... and so was I. It wasn't such a great example as I could've used a potion, I was just being stubborn.

What's your closest memorable moment of a game?

I've had some of these playing Metroid Prime. The Omega Pirate is an asshole, and when I fought him, he kept on shooting grenades, which is only supposed to happen when you're at long range. This, coupled with the frantic dodging of space pirates while on my last energy tank was nerve-wrecking.

Fallout 3, last bit of health and 3 mirelurks charge at me and I all I had was the pissy little 32 revolver. I won I still can't believe it, maybe there is a god after all.

Also I have to mention the many times in Bioshock where the Big Daddy charged me while I fired my machine gun at him and he finally drops inches away from my lovely un-drilled face. I mean that's positivley cinematic.

Mass Effect, barely dodging that lousy one hit kill geth cannon. Also just barely being able to save Wrex, I was on the edge of my seat during that scene.

Dead Space, managed to get out of the Vacuum at the last second while the entire cast of 'the mutant zombie alien brady bunch' are clawing after me.

Halo 3, most of my multiplayer experiance.

-Um... in Tekken Tag Tournament i was playing as the Chinese girl against my dad. I had one sliver of health left. He went to punch just as I did a hand stand, narrowly dodging his punch, before kicking him in the face, defeating him.

-On two seperate ocasions, Pokemon. Once, in LeafGreen, I was fighting MewTwo for probably the 80th time. I had my last Pokemon, with 5 HP, and my last Pokeball (a time ball). I threw it, with MewTwo having only 2HP (he had only 2HP for about 10 turns) and.... boom. Caught him. Made for both one of my closest calls and my closest (and hardest) catches.

-The other time, in Pearl, I had my Infernape, my last Pokemon, with only 1 HP left, fighting the leader of the Elite four's last Pokemon. They attacked and I thought I was done for, but she missed! So then, with the last time I could use Quick attack, I attacked, defeating the leader of the Elite Four. It was awesome.

those were just three I could think of.

I think in the original pokemon red/blue, while I was still a young newbie at the game, my powerful, level 100 charizard and my level 72 mewtwo had been totalled, leaving me with the next strongest, a level 17. (I know, what an idiot for not training more than two pokemon... I was young and a nOOb ok?) However, Garys final pokemon somehow managed to miss me twice as I used one of the trapping moves to keep it pinned down and then slowly ground away it its HP. By some miracle I won. Needless to say I was rather pleased (Ok, I was thrilled!)
