Monster. Watch Monster.

The story is awesome, the characters are wonderful and the main villain... there is nothing more complex and evil than this villain.

And you still end up feeling sorry for him, sometimes! This anime not only teaches you that you can feel sorry for an asshole and still think of him as an asshole, but also that sometimes people change.

...Watch Monster.

If you like giant robots, check out Full Metal Panic! sometime. Gonzo did the first season, so it's filled with "fanservice" but second season (Fumoffu) has some of the funniest moments in anime I've seen, and The Second Raid has a great story. Also, those seasons were done by Kyoto Animation, so less fanservice and terrible CGI, and more, well, normal robot anime.

Also, if you can your hands on some of the Compilation Movies of Gundam, I'd recommend giving those a watch.

Well, plenty has been said already, but still:

-Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
-High School of the Dead

I'm surprised no one here mentioned Angel Beats! yet. I saw it on Netflix, and I loved it. Little warning: You will cry by the end of the series (It was created by Jun Madea and Key Visual Arts, who have made CLANNAD, Kanon, and more).

Someone mentioned Rosario+vampire ( it got what you want , trust us o that ), but they forgot to mention Strike Witches.
My personal favouríte nowadays: Fairy Tail, they are up to 100 episodes now, and the popularity seems to just rise, and for good reason.
Moments to laugh, Moments to cry and alot of magical beings that seems to be abit towards the pervy side.

Lots of fun hours ahead for you....

Ok, so i have been out of the anime loop for years. I used to be an avid follower of mainstream anime/manga, but compared to some the amazing TV of recent years it just seemed pale and immature by comparison. So i quit.

Lately though i've had this tiny notion to watch some again and want to know what would be best?

Preferably something with big boobs and magic....maybe even magically enhanced boobs?
I wonder why you find anime immature...

for boobs and magic, and magic boobs, look no further than Queens Blade. i myself couldn't even get through one episode, so good luck to ya.

if you're looking for GOOD anime, well thats different. i like dark, creepy, or disturbing anime, so my picks would be:

Higurashi no naku koro ni (BEST. ANIME. EVER. EVER. SERIOUSLY. EVER.)
Higurashi " " " " Rei (2nd season)
Death Note
Elfen Lied
Evangelion (i'd stick with the rebuild series, for newcomers)

other ones i love, but aren't dark or creepy:

Suzumiya Haruhi
Azumanga Daioh
Axis Powers : Hetalia

i suggest watching all of these in japanese, to avoid the pervasive voice of Faye Valentine

My favorite was Code Geass, every part I enjoyed. It had a deep plot, mechs, magic, great action scenes and the ending was superb. It was too bad it had to end but I guess it was for the best. Another good thing was it had little to no fillers. You can watch the whole first season on YouTube last time I checked.

Welcome To The NHK
Death Note
Highschool Of The Dead
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Revolutionary Girl Utena

Those are all good.

Edit: For boobs and magic, you'll want Soul Eater. Maybe Witchblade, if you have no taste.

i am offended that Fooly cooly Aka FLCL has not been mentioned yet.

only 6 episodes, it is nevertheless one of the best there ever was. not even going to try to describe it here. it's that type of thing. check it out.

no, it's not recent.

What amazing TV are you watching? Because half the reason I started watching anime so much, is because of how shitty TV it.
Game of Thrones
Spartacus
Supernatural
The Sopranos (It's an old one i know but defo worth watching)
True Blood
The Wire
Big Bang Theory
South Park
Family Guy.

Some of it is a little generic i know, but i find them all well worth watching. Especially the first five ;).
