Which Character have you leveled up that you're most attached to?

I'm sitting here leveling Destruction Magic for my Redguard on Skyrim Switch. And I was thinking about how crazy I'd be if I lost this character. I put a LOT of time into him.

So it made me wonder. What character (or Toon for MMO players) have you put so much time and/or so much love that if you lost, it would cause you to flip out the worst? Or is there anything else that attaches you to that character?

And yes, it's ok if you just want to brag about your avatar. We're gamers. We get it.

None of them. In fact, I don't get how some players do it. Once my "vision" for a particular character is over... playing anymore with that character is so boring. The BEST time I have with any character in a game is creation and maybe the first 20 or 30 levels depending on the game. I've got hundreds of hours logged in on Skyrim, and 0 characters have reached level... 55, I think only one is over 50. I'm DONE with a character WAY before they get that old. I have a "build" I'm going for in a character, and I don't usually go any farther than being done with that build.

If only the Switch would let users back up their save files without having to pay Nintendo for it... ah well.

I wouldn't flip out over lost game progress, but I'm rather proud of my FFX team on PS4, having filled up all of their sphere grids and maxed all relevant stats for as far as possible.

Sometimes you want to play a deep complex game.
Other times you just want to be Iron man and fuck shit up!

A video game character? Don't think I have. Probably because in most cases any mistake or loss can be fixed by loading a save, and if not, it's because it's a roguelike and I'm aware dying is an expected part of the experience, so I don't get attached.

A pen & paper character tho? Every time. Especially if it's for a campaign heavy on roleplaying. You're just so much more involved with a p&p character, and on more than just a mechanical level. Virtually everything about them has to come from your own imagination. Appearance, personality, abilities, every word they say and action they take.

Won't help much in case of loss/theft of your Switch tho, cuz that SD card and its save data will be gone along with your device. Unless you keep a second one around as a backup, but I'm not sure if that's something you can do.

Probably none.

I don't really get attached to characters in a mechanical sense, and I've never done a hardcore run in the sense of "one death, lose everything" or something similar. If you want to talk about characters I've levelled up in RPGs that I've become attached to because of personality or character arcs or stuff like that, then sure, but I'm guessing that's not what you're talking about.

I tend to get really turned off by character levelling in general- must be why I don't play many RPGs. That said, I'm invested in the life of my Mount and Blade guy, so that one, I suppose.

Probably my 3rd Bloodborne character. I don't remember the build, but I made the cane-whip her main weapon, and with her I got the Platinum Trophy and defeated the Orphan of Kos.

The only MMO I put any serious time in, I put a whole hell of a lot of time in. Roughly 120 days playtime before I quit.

It would be my Dragoon from FFXI, played from 2004-2007. Ah, fun times. I heard they later made the game much easier where you could level up insanely quickly but some of my fondest memories of playing the game were memories of grinding with an especially good party where there was top level teamwork and we were making good exp.

DRG was apparently broken and then balanced which made people think it sucked so I had the extra fun of proving my job was still strong by being "one of the few good drgs" so it had that aspect to it to. Always fun being the underdog.

So yeah, this is why I don't play MMOs any more, I feel I got what is there to get from the experience, I did try XIV for the free month just to see how it works (the dragoons in that one don't have a pet wyvern! heresy!) and it was really good too, albeit a bit more actiony and less demanding of players, but I have too many other things going on to be able to put in the time it takes to properly enjoy an MMO.

Not a single character, but my first party from Wizardry 7 that I got to end game. That game is a HUGE time sink, keep in mind, and any journey that you succeed and thrive in will be long and arduous. I'm sad to this day that I missed out on taking them to Wiz 8, and even if I did now, my old crew is long lost on some decayed 3.5 floppy somewhere and can't join. *SIGH*

Whatever, just wash your hands.
Hmm, I guess my first character from World of Warcraft. I mean I haven't played the game since blizzard fucked with me and the year game card my friend gave me ran out and the 2nd expansion released meaning I would have had to give them money again, but I do still occasionally have dreams about playing her. By this point I wouldn't be surprised if the account was gone and I'm never giving blizzard money again so shes kinda deleted I guess.

I came from the time of Save Hygiene. Save every two steps incase the game breaks. You don't get attached to characters that way.

I spent a lot of time on a character in Daggerfall. Also spent a lot of time going back to old saves because RNG made dungeons impossible or a bug broke the game.

My necro from EQ1. I made her damn near twenty years ago, named her after an old D&D character, she was the first EQ character I ever put real time into, and I still hop onto EQ every few months to fart around on her. Real memories with that character, but my absolute favorite thing to do was sit on the newbie log feeding low levels Blackened Tier'Dal and handing out buffs.

Other than that, my WoW Paladin. I'm one of the only remaining players on my server to have the epic mount achievement, and probably the last on it to have the full Undead Slayer transmog (as in the Naxx release event set). Sure, it was "only" a Judgment recolor, but god was it an amazing recolor. Legion was fun due to that, practically nobody recognized the transmog and there were a couple times I got some major props in the class hall for rolling with a set that was only available for a limited time in vanilla and never since.

Made me feel really good, and reminded me of the days when I had one of the biggest reputations of any paladin on my original server. I used to have this knock-down, drag-out, all-out hatred-level rivalry with the server's grand marshal paladin. He was a trash-tier retnoob who got twinked out by his guild and carried by BG pre-mades all the way to grand marshal, and here I was this dinky little clown suit LC-ranked Zalgradis build who'd been in BG with him on more than enough occasions to know what's up. He was an ass, too, and just about every time we were in the same zone chat turned into a flame war.

Eventually, he got stupid and challenged me to a duel. Probably a good fifty or sixty players showed up to watch me whoop his ass, because all he knew to do was pray for SoC crits, bubble, and heal without pressure.

At the point BC dropped, I had one of the progression guilds on the server helping me get Thunderfury as a thank-you for all the times I helped their members and PuG'ed when they needed a hand. Never did get the binding off Garr, though.

i look after my shit. i don't carelessly leabe it lying around so it can be lost/stolen

it either stays with me in my bag or it stays in my Switch dock at home.

and when i had problem with my first Switch, EB games let transfer my save data from old console to the new console in store before i left.
if your EB doesn't let you do that you can always just buy a new switch outright and then swap your old one afterwards with their 7 day return policy.

My first ever WoW character I got to 60 and 70, a Night Elf rogue. My first Fem!Shep who went through Mass Effect 1-3 virtually unchanged.

My first Pokemon Gold team which doesn't exist anymore because Nintendo can't figure out multiple save slots.
It included Typhlosion, Ampharos, Togetic, Alakazam and the red Gyarados. Don't remember the last one.

To be honest I don't get too attached to RPG videogame main characters so I'd have to answer probably none of them, the closest thing would be the Nameless One from Planescape: Torment but that's because I think his story is very interesting.
This is mostly because I don't like to stick to one play-style I think it gets repetitive & boring, especially in RPGs since it's mostly numbers so I'm that asshole that has a shit-load of mid & low-level character but not a lot of maxed out ones so it's hard for me to get attached as I think most leveling up experiences are boring as hell.

As for Pen & Paper RPG characters, I think the same is true, even my favourite character that I ever played I thought was way more fun to play at the beginning of the game all the way to mid-game, but when she was an almost max level Priest she became stupidly boring to play, mostly because there was almost nothing that she couldn't accomplish, either because she was kind off a skill monkey & always had the right skill or because she was an extremely powerful spellcaster & could solve any situation with a spell.
In comparison to the beginning where she was a socially awkward naive pacifist that was mostly worthless at everything that wasn't Medicine, Healing Magic & basic Divination, but it was interesting & super fun to play because in order to convince people to do things my way in the middle of a war I had to fight against my weaknesess & try to rally other people to my cause which wasn't easy but was very interesting, besides considering that I am a cynical asshole it was very refreshing to attempt to thing like a wide-eyed naive idealist and that was super fun to play but as I ammassed power & the challenge decreased it became more dull to play, especially by the end since there was pretty much nothing I couldn't do.

I personally feel in most games high level play is just plain boring so I'd rather not bother with it.

I play a lot of stupid lootbox mobile games that it'd hurt if I ever lost my accounts. At least while I'm still interested in said games. I've burned out on a few and willingly abandoned those. But one I'm currently engaged in and have spent months to over a year of progress on? That would hurt.

I'm overall not at all fussed about PC game characters, especially not for older games that don't have a whole 'always online' requirement. There's console commands for some, there's third party save editors for others.

I lost my Terraria character once, but was like eh fuckit. All he is ultimately is a max HP pool and inventory which is easy enough to restore with a save editor. A true loss for Terraria would be a world you built up.

Ultimately the emotional attachment is kinda just 'in your head'. I see restoring them through means such as console commands or save editors to still be valid in restoring them 'in spirit'. Even if it isn't the exact same data.

I did once turn one of my MMO characters into an OC. I basically made something in Phantasy Star Online 2, not thinking much about it. But over time, collected some cosmetics and stuff and was customizing her and just decided - eh I like this. I'm going to draw her and see where I go. And ended up thinking up some weird Wild Arms/Trigun nonsense story that I will never make anything out of in my head. But I can imagine putting a bit more effort into your characters ending up becoming a creative outlet of sorts, be it a PC RPG or tabletop.

Do you mean when you've created your own character? It totally takes me out of the experience when I do that. My brain knows it not real so I can't get invested like I could if the someone has already developed a character with a backstory. That's one of the reasons I struggled to get into Skyrim. I found Kingdom Come Deliverance a much easier sell because the character was already made for me. At the end of the day, if I'm going to get into a narrative the protagonist has to be part of it so it needs to be interwoven into the story.
