So Civ IV and Civ V are on sale at steam and I want to get in on it, but Im on the fence over which to get. Civ IV is $7.50 and comes with all the emanations and Civ V is $30.00. I don't how outdated Civ IV would be compared to V, but IV's cheeper price makes me much less weary of the purchase as i wouldn't feel like it would be such a blow to my wallet. To anyone who has played these games I'd like to know your opinion.

Nothing wrong with Civ IV. It's the evolutionary conclusion of the of the original Civ format with a full feature set but, thankfully, not wobbling under a shitpile of legacy code.

Civ V takes the whole concept and starts from scratch so the feature set is pretty bare at the moment and some core issues need addressing before adding any in.

Both are good games in their own right. If you want an easier introduction to grand turn based strategy games Civ V is probably more accessible. If you want the full Civ experience then Civ IV is probably more your thing.

Get civ 2. The last well made civ game ever.
If you ignore all the others.

Though, pick up Test of Time if you want to see what every game since should have but doesn't.

Civ 4 is a lot more interesting than 5. 5 isn't too bad though if you aren't really in to strategy games, or just want something to enjoy with your kids. Not that the multiplayer works, but you could coach them over their shoulder.

Like I said in another thread. Get Civ IV. It's cheaper, and still loads of fun.

Both games are absolutely excellent. But they are also both very different. It's almost like they're from different serieses (hyperbole).

But chances are, you'll eventually have enough money for both. So get the cheaper one now, and then once you play it for 6-9 months (which is about how long I played it until I grew semi-weary), you can dive right into Civ V, which will probably be a bit cheaper by then.

Galactic Civ is the best one!

Oh...that isn't a choice. Go with Civ IV. I still play it and have loads of fun with it.

IV. I've spent SOO many nights up with that game, Even better if you can get a chum to LAN it with, 2 player CiV with simultaneous turns is fun. V hasn't held my interest anywhere near as long. So yeah, my recommendation, Civ IV, plus expansions.

I own both, and you should know that Civ V is somewhat computer intensive. For reference I play Left 4 Dead 2 on low graphics settings and it runs smoothly most of the time, while Civ 5 slows down significantly unless I play in a smaller window with everything at min settings. Civ 4 runs silky smooth though. On the flip side, Civ 5 is much prettier and has a much more fun combat system. 1 unit per hex tile (5) vs stack warfare (4 and below). If computer performance isn't an issue, it's kind of a wash between the two. When I play now I play 5 though. The game does not play out in real time so graphics and framerate aren't too important if you're willing to look past them.

You should get "Civilization" by The Andrew Sisters. Uh, yeah, hurray for obscure 40's pop-tune reference.
Probably Civ 4?

They are both good imo, and each have their pros and cons. If you want the better deal, go for Civ IV (you won't regret it), but if you are willing to fork over the dough, i'd say go for Civ V

Not sure as I haven't played Civilization 4 (although I heard it was good), but I gotta warn you, look into Civ 5's technical difficulties. Frankly for me, there were too many to enjoy the game and that's coming from a guy who's perfectly happy to get by with workarounds, tolerate bugs near-endlessly and such :\

Look into the latest patch as well, maybe they've fixed the issues by now, but there were still loads of issues a month ago or so.

If you haven't played any of the Civ series before, I would recommend Civ 5. It is a bit easier to keep track of what your attention needs to be on, and what you need to do.

Colonization is fun only if you enjoy being gang-raped by the three other European powers, and by the mother country afterwards.

Thanks to Three Dog and friends, that hardly counts as an obscure reference.

And indeed...Civ 5 looks like the beginning of bigger things to come for the Civ series, but 4 is really the culmination of everything that the original set out to do. If you can't get them both, go with 4.
