Shadows. I find it enjoying to watch your absolute carnage. First hand makes it... too narrow.
But, the tyrannical aspect I think would fall right in line.
Plus, standing back makes it easier to fix problems. You're more aware of the entire situation that way.

I'd be a mix of the 'tyrant' style and the 'good guy with a dark side' style. First I'd carefully study and memorize both the Art of War ( even though it might be considered cliched) and the Evil Overlord List before making my bid for power. Using the knowledge gleaned from the Evil Overlord List I'd begin enslaving the masses while appearing to be helping them. For example, I'd give everyone free unlimited (time wise) high-speed internet access, giving free (and good) universal health care, legalizing pot (and possibly other drugs) and eliminating the 'pay' part of pay-site porn. Then I'd slowly and methodically take over other countries and powers from the shadows.
After using that strategy to safely become the Supreme Overlord of Earth, I'd turn my scientists to discovering the key to immortality (free for myself and my trusted Lieutenants, and a small charge for the public) as well as fixing the planet/environment and possibly colonizing Venus, Mars and the Moon (to give to friends or family).

A mix of shadows and the nice guy. I could reap all of the rewards without too much publicity as the shadows and be able to enjoy it in relative safety and comfort as the nice guy since attacking the nice guy is slightly reprehensible.
probably closest to the first one and the last one, I think I would tend to be the very personal, one man army kind of evil, the whole honorable, mostly stoical bad guy warrior.

I don't see "scheming lieutenant to an evil overlord who eventually stabs his boss in the back, takes over his operation and does a much better job than the idiot who broke into laughter whenever he did something amoral". Because that's me. Although I guess it's a variation of the fourth option, so that one.
