It is tough to go in comparing games that are generations apart. The mechanics and way games were designed in the 90s and early 00s is just different. There was generally a lot more freedom in those games but also a lot less to immerse you and there was less polish. I love Fallout 1 and 2(I suggest going back and playing with the restoration mod if you haven't) and I also love Fallout 3 and New Vegas. I really don't consider them as one in the same. Fallout 3 and NV are really just spiritual sequels in my eyes. I have the same feeling with the new X-com.

That said, if you are just getting into the new Fallouts I suggest starting with Fallout 3 before going to NV. While NV is better, Fallout 3 is a great experience and should be enjoyed before spoiling it with the(IMO) better features of NV.

The first Fallout game I played was Fallout 3 and it is also my favorite. I can only compare between NV and 3 since I have no will to play the first 2 (I hate TPS).

So the reasons I prefer 3 would be: Quest are actually unique and do not feel like I'm repeating the same quest, The DLC (minus the swamp one) are awesome (NV's is good too, I just prefer 3's), the quest actually possess consequences like Megaton being destroyed, and lastly the story was ten times better than NV's, god I hated NV's story it was awful.

I better prepare a flameshield.
Why do you prefer 3's story? I really can't comprehend why, so please explain, because I thought its story was boring and completely uninteresting.

I prefer Fallout: New Vegas out of all the fallouts. I suffered through some of 3 and I can't get into the first one, even though I actually want to like fallout 1. I love Fallout: New Vegas's story and the gameplay was pretty decent and the Wasteland is interesting.
Well the reason I enjoy 3's story better is because I found it to be very unique and not just endless go here and shoot this quest. That one vault where you go to the 40s style town and can either become a mass murderer or have the Chinese invade has to be one of the most unique and awesome part in almost any video game I have ever played. Also I thought the factions were done perfectly though they do lean to the black and white standpoint a little to much. I also find the whole story unique and quite interesting. Most likely since I always play a good guy I enjoy helping people, which that is all Fallout 3 is.

Now on to why I despise NV's story. the factions are just cut and paste knockoffs of each other. The quest are pretty much the same for all sides with a little changes here and there. Also this really makes me mad. If you want to go pretty much anywhere you must not be hostile to the NCR or some of the worlds largest towns are on a shoot on sight basis, and no I don't want to abandon my Desert Ranger gear for crappy NCR armor to get in. Lastly the Benny thing. This is not good story telling... "Guy shoots you in the head for unknown item. Item is wanted by the most powerful man in the wasteland. Main character meets powerful dude then kills guy who shot him." Great story.

That is why I prefer

That makes sense. 3 was pretty unique and I can see why people would like the story now. I still don't like it but I won't argue.

For me it would be Fallout New Vegas, I keep going back to it to replay over and over again.

Fallout 3 manages to hold my attention for a few hours at best before I decide I can't stand it.

FO1/2 I have tried, got them from GOG (didnt play them when I was younger, most of my time was taken up by RTS games, Dune/C&C/RA/TA etc) and ended up with a migraine pretty quickly. I also believe the turn based type of nature they have puts me off, which really is a shame as I do still want to find out just why they were so highly praised.

Storywise, the original or 2

Gameplay wise probably tactics or New Vegas

However fallout 3 needs props for showing it can be done, well, in 3d. While it isn't perfect, it got the sense of being in a wasteland, exploring and so on that I think no other entry into the series ever did. New Vegas didn't feel wastelandish at all...place was freaking busy.

I prefer Fallout 3. I own 1 and 2, but like a lot of people, they weren't for me. I like Fallout 3 for a few key reasons. Mainly the exploration factor, sidequests, and easter eggs/references.

In terms of exploration, this game is jam packed. Almost every location has something interesting about it, so it feels really rewarding to just go walking around searching for things. In New Vegas unfortunately there are invisible walls in some places, and a lot of the locations are just cut and paste empty shacks.

With the sidequests. I think most people can admit the main story in Fallout 3 was kind of crap. However the I think the sidequests made up for this and then some. While there are much less than in New Vegas, every single one is fully fleshed out, usually with multiple choices throughout, and every one is a weird/quirky self-contained story. From vampires to androids to cannibals to talking trees to bizarre "superheroes" "villains" to giant firebreathing ants, I feel the sidequests in this game have real charm, and obviously had a lot of thought and detail put into them.

Lastly the references and easter eggs. In this game, there are hundreds upon hundreds of homages/references/easter eggs to classic sci-fi and post apocalyptic media (among other things), and for a fan of those genres it's a real treat to try and find all of them. Even some sidequests are full tributes to specific media, such as the "Those!" sidequest being based on the movie "Them!". In New Vegas, most of this kind of content was relegated to small moments in the Wild Wasteland perk, as it was created to hold such content that the devs felt would be "out of place".

Oh, and Point Lookout was great - some of the best DLC you can buy.

Without playing games from the series that came before 3, i'm going with F:NV, because the world felt more colorful, both visually and atmospherically, and i liked the setting and the world much more.

My favourite is Fallout.

The first, original, real one. At first, I chuckled and giggled and foamed and shouted at the at times horrible, horrible suicidal AI, but all in all, that was one entertaining, fun and inspiring game. Thank God for save games. Fallout stood out in an era when a good RPG experience was already becoming a rare thing. Before Fallout, it was almost mostly JRPGs on SNES for me, and the fistful of mostly terribly ugly, but fun PC fare. Fallout had style, an attitude, and more dark humour and seemingly random surprises than anything I'd seen until then.

Pretty closely followed by Fallout 3. I didn't believe in the folks from the Chariot of Buggy Wrath Randomness to bring Fallout back, and into FPS 3D even. Gotta say I got hooked to it in no time.

Fallout 2 would be my number three. More of the same, yet different enough I found myself putting it on hold forever and going through a pretty disconnected experience there.

I pretty much hate NV. I don't like Vegas. Can't stand assholes. And that game is so chock full of asshole characters it could just as well be called Fallout: Everyone's An Asshole, Hairy Pimple of Doom Edition. I ended up killing pretty much every member of every faction the game threw at me, and I turned into Ms. Jesus Elvis Hitler Stalin in the process. Didn't like that too much.

-fallout 1- a small amount of time
I learned the jinxed trait sucks and the game play is kinda dull. I will give it another chance and not use the jinxed trait that time (hopefully the combat is less annoying).

-fallout 3- about 2 hours
explored a little and I fail to see why I should even give a single fuck why Liam Neeson ran off. It is a Bethesda game thus I never any exceptions in there ability to write. All I expect from Bethesda is a nice world to explore. When I have the time play it; then I will be just to explore the world like a theme park while trying some quest mods. hopefully I find some quest mods with better writing then your average Bethesda game.

-fallout New Vegas- over 700 hours
Despite it's flaws I really like the game if you can't tell by the hours spent in the game. By the amount of time I played it compared to the other two games it is naturally my favorite. of course I am using mods

While I am an absolute fan of the original two and they will always hold a special place in my heart. It has to be New Vegas these days.

There are few enough Fallout games that you should have done a poll.
I liked 3 the best, because i just felt the most open and free.

New Vegas all the way, true freedom of choice, a world that makes sense and is true to the lore and themes established by the first two games and squadmates with actual personalities that actually develop

New Vegas all the way. I loved the original games, but they never managed to suck me in the way New Vegas did, while Fallout 3 had... issues, that really tarnished my experience (like the morality system or the original ending, just to name the two biggest flaws).

Fallout 2 and 3 are definitely my favourites. Both are the pinnacles of each type of game in the series. Fallout 2 was much better than the admittedly pretty bad Fallout 1 (when compared to 2, it was pretty good and very original at its release). It perfected the gameplay style and had much better writing and fairly interesting characters.

There was a huge shift in the series at number 3 and I for one, think it was the best thing that could have happened. They tried to make some changes to the isometric style with Fallout tactics, and that was fucking awful. It was so long since Fallout 2 and to release anything too similar would not have done the series justice.
Fallout 3 was far better than Fallout New Vegas. New Vegas was trying far too hard to be one of the older games, which didn't really work in the series' new form if you ask me. Although it had alot of improvements over Fallout 3 in terms of gameplay, like faction-attitude and Hardcore mode, but it was really one of those 'technically better to play but much less impact'

So all Fallout games are amazing (except tactics) but New Vegas follows the original story your in the core region game makes nods to 1&2 and has way better characterization your companions make you feel for them unlike in Fallout 3. Now keep in mind you cant compare the plot of 3 & Vegas because they Vegas is all about multiple story's while 3's big thing is a singular story with a few differences between playthroughs. Granted both are great games Vegas is by far the better game if your looking to continue the actual Fallout series.

Fallout 1 is among my favourite games of all time (even despite the fact that it took me three attempts to survive the first location).

I've never managed to finish F2 or F3, and never got to play New Vegas. And all I remember from Tactics is that it was slooow.

On a side note: I wish Fallout 3 and New Vegas had the same level of dedication from modders as Skryim and Oblivion. They have nothing in comparison.
What are you talking about? Have you ever seen New Vegas Nexus?! That place has THOUSANDS of mods, including a lot of gameplay and graphics enhancements, voiced questlines and even complete overhauls!

Just to name a few essentials:

-Fallout New Vegas Redesigned: Complete mesh overhaul, making characters fit their voice actors and the lore more, fixing models, prettying up things with high-res textures, etc.

-More Perks: It adds hundreds of new perks to the game (including new DLC and companion perks) with new graphics, effects and allowing even greater customization.

-WMX - Weapon Mods Extended: Adds weapon mods for ALL weapons in the game (including DLC weapond AND unique ones).

-Pipboy Readius: Replaces the ugly Pip-Boy interface with a sleek PDA with much better visibility.

-EVE - Essential Visual Enhancements: An effects overhaul, mostly adding new effects to energy weapons plus a lot of other small touches.

-MTUI: UI overhaul, makes the game's font smaller and ands better scrolling to navigate in the menus.

-CASM:NV: And autosave mod that saves for you on fixed time intervals and rotates 20 saves for your convenience.

And the king of it all:

-Project Nevada: Complete gameplay overhaul, adding so much stuff that lising it off would take ages. Just a few snippets: Sprinting, AP dependent bullet time, grenade hotkey, helmet HUD's (if you put on a helmet, you will actually see it in first person mode), toggleable vision-enhancements on power-armor helmets, upgradeable implants integrated into the lore (with related perks), and much more.

Fallout 3 is by far my favorite, none of the other games hold a candle to it after I've modded it heavily.

I never really got into the first two fallout games, just didnt enjoy it. the environments were all the same dull brown and because it was isometric it lacked scale, so it was just dull. i found the gameplay tedious and never got into the story, it seem really dull. I really like fallout 3 and new Vegas but just never like the originals.

you forgot
-New Vegas Enhanced Content(NVEC)-
to simply put it is a mod compilation that is still active and being improved. even if one is not interested in the bugfixes or the enchantments(EVE has been added to this) or complete which is a combination of both. it also has something call NVEC reused CND. it reduces crashing and is also added to NVEC complete
in it's the downloads area it also has
More Perks merged- it the same thing as the merged perk mod but instead a bunch if plugins taking up load order space it is on esp that contains all of More Perks allowing(less load order space being taken up can be very important for heavily modded games.)

also a nice alliterative to the pipboy Readius is the Pip-Boy 2500. it does the same thing and it looks more fallout-ish(lore friendly) and less modern.
