You want a similar but utterly baffling scenario? Try the Red Alert series.
See, if Homefront's premise had involved time travel and goofy dolphin armies, then "Greater North Korea" wouldn't be an issue; there's no pretense being made at realim when your setting and major plot points are cartoony and supernatural. It's their attempt to play it as a realistic near-future scenario that makes it so absurd.
Yes, well. I really don't want to partake too much in this discussion, but you do make a very good point here.

Pretty much most of the recent Sonic games like Sonic 06, ShTH, etc.

Also, who plays Mario for the stories anyway? Those games are heaps of fun nonetheless.

The Great Gatsby, for the NES. I played that game believing that the plot was true to the book. I went on to read the book, and was SEVERELY DISAPPOINTED. I couldn't even finish, such was the depth of my despair!
They made a Great Gatsby video game? How is that possible?! Is it a first person shooter from the view of Mr Wilson? I cannot wrap my mind around that.
You walk around throwing hats at waiters, drunkard, bouncing clowns, and weird dancing people. You also fight a giant pair of glasses on a train. Here, try it for yourself: http://greatgatsbygame.com/

Fallout 3, hands-down. When you sit back and think about what you just played through, you run a very real risk of stupidity-induced heart explosion. Honorable mention goes the Red Alert 3, but I don't know if that counts since it's deliberately stupid.

Anyone that says the CoD games clearly has no idea about anything. "Capture the objectives" is all the story you'll ever need.

but no really that's one meme that made me crack up when replaying MW2 XD

I'm tempted to say FFXIII but I didn't see it all the way through
couldn't take anymore of it... :/ I really did try to like it
Believe it or not, the story actually fell apart at the end. It was pretty interesting and above average until then, and you didn't have to read the datalogs if you knew what the shitty lingo meant.
yeah? you think so? haha idk
maybe if the characters had been more likable (some say they grow on you, maybe)
but I also think I simply didn't like the setting (very flashy) as opposed to the more grungy or darker settings of some previous FF games

The only thing I like about FFXIII right now, or rather what stands out isn't even the story itself, but rather STEELGUARD.

The game that I remember with the biggest stinker of a story? Psychic Force if anything, even Eternal Ring had a more engaging story.

*has specifically avoided reading the rest of the thread - knows for a fact it will mostly be hating on Halo, CoD and Final Fantasy, as well as possibly a flamewar over Mass Effect*

OK, so I don't know it for a fact. How accurate was I, though? I'd appreciate it if someone told me.

Oh, me?

Hmmm.

Putting to one side jokes about Mario or Pong (of which I suspect there are already several), I don't think I can nominate anything. The one thing I could nominate as having "the worst" story, I haven't yet finished, so it would be unfair of me to judge it (what if it suddenly improves dramatically in the second half?).

Final Fantasy X and X2 (same crap diferent name). Man that history was a piece of trash. Generic characters, lame story lines, horrible ending...
Totally have to agree. FF X-2 was the first FF game i played, and it nearly put me off for life. Quite liked the gameplay but i LOATHED the characters and the story. So afterwards i borrowed FF X from a friend, and same thing again, i liked the gameplay but just could not stand tidus. Just never bought into the whole 'blitzball player saves the world' story. Plus fuck blitzball, i hated that game.

Destroy all humans path of the furon. Look! It's a bad guy, who isn't actually the bad guy and has no fucking idea of what is going on. And then after the real baddie the master is revealed he gets insta-killed in a cut-scene by orthopox who then becomes the emperor... for some reason.

Way to kill a series Sandblast.

Worst... hm...
Alpha Protocol's felt pretty basic and unoriginal, but I was still slightly sucked into it.

Many games lack stories all togeather though. Not sure if that's what you're looking for by "worst", but if they count I vote for Demon's Souls.

Tetris.

Nothing is ever explained with that game. Who keeps dropping the blocks? Why are they made in such awkward shapes? How has gravity been suspended to allow the blocks to fall so slowly? Where do the blocks come from? Where do they go?

Worst. Storytelling. Ever.

Custer's Revenge. [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Custer%27s_Revenge]

4 pages, and nobody has mentioned it yet? Seriously escapists, is our memory so shallow?

Halo isn't that bad, CoD isn't that bad, cliched crap isn't that bad, JRPG games aren't convoluted enough to be that bad.

I mean, the only game I can think of that might be on that level is Rapelay.
Hey, if a game has a backstory that literally makes people a bit sick in the stomach you can't really call it bad. Raping the hot chick has at least some sense to it, it's just in really (and I do mean really) poor taste. It's like snuff films, people getting dismembered for real and videos of that get sold. 99.99% of the people wouldn't watch that for the world, but not because there's a bad story in there.

Now that game where you're a space-ship and you're falling down a pit. What is going on here?
But that game is story-less so it doesn't really count.

How about Angry Birds?
There's these birds and they want to rob these pigs so they do suicide strikes against them.

Uhm, come again?

The amount of people saying Left 4 Dead and Borderlands saddens me. Just because a game tells a story with subtlety or provides an un-expected ending twist at the expense of the player, doesn't mean it has a terrible story.
