It would be a bit much to say that soulstorm killed the DoW series but it should at least get put away for GBH. Godamn I hate Ironlore

Halo had such promise then along came a half-baked sequel that should have entered the world as a $29.99 special. Nothing kills a series more than the release of 1/2 of a game at full price. Honorable mention goes to Call of Duty 4. COD4 suffered from the same problem. Nothing angers me more than wasting money on half a game.
Half a game would be something like.....KOTOR2, where the last 3rd was buggy and patchy as hell and felt like it was rush out the door(for good reason).

COD4 was a complete game. It did not end on a cliffhanger, it did not have lingering plot threads dangling around(other then if anyone actually survived the end).It was short, but I'd rather have a short, totally awesome game then a longer, mediocre game. Short does not equal half.

I have to disagree with WhiskyOscar... Generals (and Zero Hour) were damn fine games. C&C Tiberium Sun (the second C&C) killed that series, horribly done with more focus on looking hitech than plausable. I'm still wary about getting C&C3 because of how bad 2 was.
As someone who felt C&C2:TS was incredibly disappointing, I enjoyed C&C3, because I felt the gameplay was more in line with the generals/RA2 Series that I've enjoyed so much more.

Its a common problem - most of the time its not knowing when to stop and cashing in as much as possible.

Happens in films as well. Look at Saw, Friday the 13th, halloween etc

For me, it was devil may cry two. To me it was rather like going out to meet with an old grlfriend (A stylish if tarty one at that) and finding she was pregnant, acned and teetotal. In short, exactly the same BUT FAR LESS FUN. still, I managed to get a good trade-in price at the slave- whoops, I mean, game shop.

Oh yes, and lets not forget playstation three. Now there's a saga to make you not only dump the ungrateful tramp but immediately start screwing either her worst enemy, her younger sister or the high-maintanance college grad round the street.

For those who can't work out the metaphor, ask someone else BUT ON NO ACCOUNTS SHOW IT TO YOUR MOTHERS.

Shadow Hearts 3 ruined the Shadow Hearts line, i mean don;t get me wrong it was still an amazing game but without Yuri (since he's dead or insane depending on the ending u got) or the original developers Midway, it felt wrong. really really wrong, like how Yahtzee describes Guitar Hero III.
ALso Genji 2 for the PS3, they took every good thing from Genji on the PS2, locked it in a box and burnined it alive while making all the bad things multiple like hamsters infused with bunny DNA (even the A** combat that it has is degraded by the sheer amount of unfairness that inhabits that game)
And probably both Resident Evil Outbreaks

Colony Wars was one of the greatest games I've played. I eagerly anticipated the release of the sequel, Colony Wars: Vengeance. After purchasing Vengeance I cried myself to sleep. It didn't just fail to live up the original, it failed at everything. I'm still baffled as to how a third game got the green light, but I outright refuse to ever touch Red Sun after the unmitigated suck of Vengeance.

MegaManX5 raped my childhood memories and went forever into franchise milking.
Halo2 COULD have not existed.
Bubsy3D: Now THAT's how you pull the plug. A franchise created to be milked? DIE! No remorse.
Final Fantasy X: Way to go with a DULL storyline without any other character's development. Then it was X-2: Powerpuff girls meets Final Fantasy. You just can't get below that.
F-Zero GX: Cause there's only ONE way to make this game even better, and I know they won't be able to find it.

Dues Ex 2: The Invisible War kill the joy that was the first game.

I was going to rant about what was wrong, but when writing it I realized the answer was "everything". I can't think a redeeming value for this game. Huck, just before it came out the announced they were making a third one, then retracted it a few weeks later when it turned out that the second one should never have seen the light of day.

Descent 3 Killed the series there. Losing your afterburn, etc. after every level, that was dumb, and the weapons were really disproportionate. EMD gun had NO use.

Final Fantasy 8 I think killed that one. At the very least it maimed it, and then 10 went in for the sucker punch. 10-2 killed puppies and babies it was so bad. 7 rocked, and 9 was cool, but after that it was lame sequels that were poorly made, and new games that made you want to kill something. 12's whole, that box MAY contain the item you want, if the random generator actually lets it appear. ARARGH

Doom 3 was pretty, but lame. Definitely killed that one.

Quake Arena was a cheap copy of Unreal Tournament, and killed that series.

Broken Sword 4 took a good adventure series and shit all over it. It's not a good sign when you start thinking of Godfather 3 in a favorable light in comparison.

You're crazy. The last Friday the 13th had Jason as an undead hyper-regenerative cyborg in space stuffing holographic naked camp girls into sleeping bags and beating them against equally holographic trees.

That's *quality*, brotha.

Yuri's Revenge Killed Red Alert, it moved the camera farther away and you couldn't adjust, the story was idiotic, and half the new units were just wtf how does that fit in?

Also Generals killed C&C in general, it took it completely out of context of the Command & Conquer world and was Battlefield 2 turned into a RTS. Zero Hour was a slight improvement in that its multiplayer was good except in that it didnt matter how fast your computer was you still lagged out the arse.

I don't know about you, but I thought Powerpuff Girls was an awesome show. And all this hate on X-2, it's as if no one remembers Mystic Quest.

Honestly I don't think that X and X-2 were all that bad, sure they weren't some of the better games but you can't make constantly platinum level games on a constant basis. Honestly I think the drop in quality started with FFVII, because at that point Square started to target a demographic outside their original and while each game has been at least above-average since then it seems as if they have dumbed down the series to make it more accessible which I can understand if not agree with. And for the record I liked X-2, granted that may be because I actually like Yuna and Rikku even if I disagree with how Square handled character design in the game.

To keep on topic I think EA as a whole killed the football games back when they bought the NFL license and may kill games as a whole in the next five to ten years. If Morrowind didn't kill the Elder Scrolls series then it beat it over the head to lie in a pool of blood for Oblivion to finish off. Halo 3 killed not only its series but FPSs in general, giving the whole genre another reason to turn out sub-par single player games in favor of multiplayer. WoW killed the Warcraft series as I doubt Blizzard will start work on WC4 any time soon, especially as they have at least another 2 expansions for WoW planned. Doom 3 killed the doom series, because unless Doom 4 comes with a brick of solid gold I'm not touching it.

Half of the games here I consider the best in the series.
Esp Final Fantasies IX and X - those virtually resurrected the series after number VIII lost the plot completely. They even made me want to play X-2 (for about 5 minutes).
Broken Sword 4 removed the annoying box puzzles.
Splinter Cell: DA had some original ideas for the series. I hope they reuse them in #5 with a bit more spit and polish.
KOTOR 2 - I loved the story and didn't even notice that some parts were missing.
Deus Ex 2 - Not that great but not the crime against humanity many describe it to be. On a good note, the story was far better than the original.
