Which one do you think makes for a better costume? One that is bought, or one that is homemade?

At my school today there were quite a few people dressed up. Some in generic horror stuff, most as characters, and even some as inanimate objects.

I went dressed as Sanji, in a costume that was pretty well made and had some time put into it, but only my friends recognized the character and left most others confused. There was another kid who went dressed up as the Joker from Dark Night and it was fairly well done and everyone recognized him, but he got it from a Joker costume package (minus what he did with his face where he took some liberties). Now while I do agree that his costume is better made, the fact that its store bought bothered me when everyone started complimenting him on it.

So for each category, which do you think makes for a better costume?

Well Done: Bought over Homemade or Homemade or Bought?
Moderately Done: Bought over Homemade or Homemade or Bought?
Poorly Done: Bought over Homemade or Homemade or Bought?

To be honest, it doesn't really bother me where the costume comes from as long as it looks pretty good. Some people just don't have the time to put effort into a homemade costume so a store bought one is the easier option. I tend to towards store bought as I'm lazy but I do try to find a good quality one.

I myself usually go for the homemade, but I don't really care one way or the other.

I happen to be able to make Malcolm Reynolds (Firefly), Jayne Cobb (Firefly), Scout (TF2), Hunter (Left 4 Dead), and Shane (The Walking Dead) from my normal clothes.

Also, why are all the Haloween threads so overwhelmingly negative?

home made, it's easy enough to buy a costume, but putting one together yourself make's it all the more enjoyable.

I almost always prefer homemade and as cheap as possible.... Because I hate spending so much money on costumes. This year I spent £1 on an axe prop. I dressed as a crazy, murdering lumberjack.

I've had like 4 ambulances, 3 firetrucks, 3 cop cars, and the provincial police drive by my street in the course of 3 hours.

Its not a happy night for many people. It is very fun for me, but I don't get my house TP'd or my cat killed.
