I want to try out an MMO so I'm asking what the best option is? wait for the old republic or should i join the 12 million people of Warcraft or some other MMO i can waste my time on. To be specific i would like to play one that i can customize my own character quite heavily.

You might try DDO. It's based off of the Dungeons&Dragons Universe, so you can quite literally customize everything, your appearance, skills, even the classes you take. Want to be a rogue-wizard-barbarian? Go right ahead.

If you're a fan of Warhammer 40k, you could wait for the Dark Millenuim one, or Old Republic?

But not runescape, please not runescape.

If you want a (realistic) and combat based MMO, go for Age of Conan. There is still magic but I guess its realistic compared to..
If you want something Fantasy based, go for Allods online. It is free, but it's surprisingly good when you get used to the quirks
If you want something that just focuses on everything, go for LOTR online. You can fight, fish cook, smith armour, etc etc..

umm, depends, if you really like fantasy PVP based asskicking... go warhammer online... it's fun, lots o pvp.
not so into pvp but want fantasy, lotro or wow are better for pve. lotro has more prettier scenery than wow, and has a lotr storyline which i like alot... wow has more people so it's a much busier game and easier to get groups for stuff... so really it's all down to preference...

and if you're wondering i have played litterally hundreds of mmos over the years... alotta free ones and almost every pay to play one out there.

oh also pirates of the burning seas is a fun one if you really really like pirates.

If customization is what your after, City of Heroes might just be what you're looking for. It's got a Superhero/Comic Book feel to is, but the story within the world is pretty deep, and there are so many different customization options that it can actually be overwhelming to beginners. It's worth a look, anyways. IMO it's a lot more fun than WoW.

Depends on what you want from an MMO.

- If you want sci-fi and the best sandbox MMO out there, go for EVE Online.
- If you want excellent PvE and pretty good PvP, a rich world to explore and simply a lot of things to do (WoW gives you quite a bit of freedom on how you want to tackle the game), go for WoW.
- If you're a fan of Lord of the Rings, go for LotRO as it captures the feeling of Middle Earth really well.
- If you want more focus on PvP, go for Warhammer Online or Age of Conan. The latter is a lot better now than during release.

And plenty of options in between. I play WoW myself, might try out DC Universe and definitely going to play Star Wars: The Old Republic.
Just give any MMO that seems appealing a try, that's what free trials are for and pretty much every MMO has one.

As for customisation, MMO's don't offer you as much of that as single-player RPG's. City of Heroes lets you create quite an extensive character though, WAR lets you decorate your own armour (decals and colours) and WoW and LotRO have titles, pets and all that jazz.

Start with WoW, imo. Give it an honest shot. Don't be like the fanboys that start off hating it and freak out at the smallest problem.

If you find the game play style enjoyable, but not the world then move on to LOTRO. Actually, wait til that game goes free to play and just go with LOTRO if you don't want to pay money.

Holy hell, I didn't think anyone found it that fun.
I enjoyed that game for a while. Played it off and on even after City of Villains came out. It's boring for me, now. I've gone back during their free weekends and just couldn't bring myself to play it for more than 20 minutes. I've done it all already and it was painful to do it again.

I wont argue about customization. That was what kept me in that game for so long. I loved creating characters.
Lol, to be honest I'm not sure why I enjoyed it so much. It's not that I didn't get bored, Though. Like, I'd usually take several-month-long breaks, but then come back to it and enjoy it like I did in the beginning. I havn't played for the last couple years, though, so I'm not sure what its like anymore.

£9 a month is the general fee for mmos bud. Old Republic will have a fee as well. Then again £9 is incredibly expensive for a months worth of entertai- oh wait.

Also, WoW has a hell of a lot of servers to upkeep, which costs A LOT of cash to keep stable and provide the constant stream of content.

Guild wars is so segregated and uses so much p2p/ it's not on the same scale, so the fact that it's free isn't really relevent, alongside the fact NCsoft finances it with the billion other mmos they run.

I'm currently downloading DOMO, found it in a top 10 MMO list. Doesn't matter if it's bad because it's free!

I play WoW on and off, its pretty good, can't think of anything I dislike about it, and if you're into mods its good to mod. Only thing is, you have to pay,and thats really annoying.
