I used to play runescape a few years back, along with most of my mates, it was great fun. then we shifted to WoW... I played it for about a year, quit for a year, played for a couple of months, quit for a year then played for another couple of months... with the long breaks, it makes the game much more rewarding and exciting when you do play it.
my friends that did play it constantly for years now just find it robotic and a bore.
I can't really get into any other MMO :/
OT: you should wait for guild wars 2 to come out, that looks pretty decent :D

If you like instances, Dungeons and Dragons Online is for you. Unfortunately, it doesn't start getting really fun until level eight quests. I like the game because it's a good adaptation of D&D without being too complex. It follows the typical MMO formula otherwise, so it's easy to jump from WoW to DDO. Just don't expect very deep PvP or an overworld(because even outside is an open-air dungeon with objectives).

Have you checked out Aeria Games? They have a few pretty good free-to-play MMOs, like Shin Megami Tensei IMAGINE Online.

Lord of the rings online isn't free to play yet.
Its been delayed for another month, I can say this because im one of those cretins who actually subscribed to the game 2 weeks before F2P to get the free cookies then got screwed when it didn't actually launch.

So no, at this moment in history Lotro is not F2P and if your trying to get away from wow clones dont touch lotro. It IS wow just with a middle earth theme and half the content and functionality. Yeh the community is more mature but it also has its share of inbreds too.

It also has no pvp worth of discussing but in its defence every single class is unique with no one class being interchangable with another or expendable and it is heavily orientated to the PvE side of things if that is your taste.

So Yeh, not F2P atm.
